The story I'm about to tell you happened some time ago. Back when carrying a phone in your pocket was an impossible dream for many. It was an era where nights blended into days through music and dancing, and a generation of young people who looked at the world with the greatest desire to own it. At that time, I had just turned 19 and spent my nights partying, fueled by excessive alcohol and menthol cigarettes. I had earned a bit of a reputation as a heartbreaker among the girls in town, a reputation I was proud of, even though it made it increasingly difficult to find someone to spend the night with.
That summer afternoon had something else in store for me, something that would change my perception of life and death, or at least the line that separates the two. I arrived on Calle Grande around 10 with some friends. In one of the abandoned warehouses, they were going to hold what had been advertised as the biggest party of August. The reason I couldn't miss it was that for many of my friends, it would be the last party before heading off to university. I, on the other hand, would stay home in my village; I'd been working in a small mechanic's shop for years.
The party started, and amidst laughter and cheap alcohol, the hours passed. Around one in the morning, we were all drunk enough to barely recognize each other in the crowd and still be standing. I saw my friends walk by and leave with their conquests, but no one approached me. I didn't care, though, since I really just wanted to have fun and dance. My watch struck two in the morning when my feet told me to stop, and I went straight to a bench. Then I saw her. Sitting at the other end of the bench with her legs crossed was a girl, the most beautiful my eyes had ever seen. Her face was pale but with rosy cheeks, perfect straight black hair, and large brown eyes—a beauty that was hard to ignore. She was wearing a white dress, far too elegant for where we were, but I didn't think much of it.
"I think you should go now," the girl said gently, but for some reason her voice only sent a chill down my spine.
"Shall I walk you home?" I asked.
"Thank you, I was hoping to hear that," she said.
We walked down Calle Grande together. At that hour of the morning, no shops were open, and the darkness was occasionally broken by a flickering light. Back then, news of robberies and murders in the town, especially of young people, was quite common, so although I didn't show it, I feared for both of our safety.
"When I count to three, run and don't let go," the girl said, squeezing my hand.
We saw the silhouettes of two tall men emerge from the darkness.
"One, two, three," the girl said.
We ran and ran until we were out of the street. The dizziness from the drinks had vanished with fright.
"How did you know they were there?" I asked her.
"I saw them first," she replied. "This is my house. Thanks for bringing me."
"Aren't you going to tell me your name?"
"My name is Laura. Come see me tomorrow."
I saw her come in and say goodbye as she closed the door. When she disappeared, I just ran. I ran the four kilometers to my house and fell asleep instantly on the sofa. I woke up the next day, almost at noon. All I could think about was that girl and how lucky I was to have been together that night, the fear of having lost my life if she hadn't noticed the men. There was only one thing left to do: go to her house.
And so I did. I went back to Calle Grande and knocked on the door where I'd seen her go.
"Hello, is Laura here? Are you her mother?" I asked the woman who answered.
"Laura? My daughter died five years ago," the woman replied, her face filled with hatred and resentment.
Then I remembered. I remembered Laura. I remembered the girl who was mugged on Calle Grande five years ago as she was leaving a party, the girl who lost her life at the hands of thieves.

-¿Te acompaño a casa?
-¿No me vas a decir tu nombre? -Me llamo Laura, ven mañana a verme.
