The same false teachings that troubled the early Christians still exist today, making Jude’s admonition as important now as it was then. To guard against such errors, Scripture instructs us to be mindful of the foundation we build upon. Apostle Paul warned the Corinthian Church about building on the right foundation in 1 Corinthians 3: 10 – 15.
True doctrine, the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, can be likened to gold, silver and precious stones, the same materials Isaiah and John described in the heavenly city. But on the other hand, heretical teachings are compared to wood, hay and stubble, easily consumed and of no lasting value.
