How Attached Are You to a Character Created in a Game?

How attached are you to a personalized character?

I've played many games with character customization but generally just go for a 'randomized until they get a look I like' and alter it a little bit from there.

But some people go the distance to actually finesse and fine-tune mostly every bit of the character. When I do that I feel like I have to come up with a character motivation, their theme, why they look like that, and that is just too time consuming sometimes but also warranted because I want the character to fit the story I made up for them in the setting the game is in.

When I created my character in Arc Raiders, I was told that the surface was a desolated place teeming with robots hellbent on destroying humanity and other raiders were cutthroat individuals or groups that were scavenging and scraping to survive. So I made my character pissed off looking, short haircut, with some scars on his face.

The actual tone of the game world and how players interacted was totally different. The quest givers were mostly displayed lightheartedly and Speranza was chock full of people wandering around without much care or worry, intercom speakers cracking jokes, bars full of food and drink with characters lingering without a hurry.

My character looked out of place now but it was what it was.

One of my friends did a fine-tune customization on their character, ran through the game in different play styles, did all the quests, completed many personal goals in the game, and eventually had their character complete the 'expedition' train and set their raider off to roam the other areas of the surface, sort of a retirement of playing that character. They said that the little cutscene that played of seeing their character go over the hilltop, glance back at the camera, and move on out of sight was enough for them to lose interest in the game. They were supposed to create a new raider but that character they sent off on the expedition was a piece of 'them', to a degree, and now playing Arc Raiders just didn't feel 'right'.

They tried to play Arc Raiders again with the new character but just couldn't get into the zone and stopped playing. ---

Another game I've played recently is Darktide. In that game the character creation has almost 9 pages of options to select in order to make that character 'yours' in the Warhammer 40k setting.

It's a lot of input just for one character but this character is the person the player will be having to deal with for as long as they play.

I picked a class that fit my idea of what I would want to be in 40k, selected their homeworld, chose the nuances of their vocation, picked their 'ideals', and other things that made that character feel like somebody born in the 40k universe and not just a simple person.

About 3 times now I've heard my character say something that sounds like something I would say or think. It is slightly uncanny how similar the characters responses are to how I think about topics.

Will I ever make a second character in Darktide? Probably not (unless they release a Commissar class) because I feel too attached to the character now after hearing them speak, their quirks, the way they play, and also I have no interest in the other classes in the game.

It's a bit of an odd thing to ask, "Are you attached to a character you customized, named, and created to be your persona in the game?" The reason I don't spend much time on a characters looks is because I prefer my characters face to be covered almost all the time. I don't want to waste a large amount of time on a character feature that will be hidden from view. That doesn't mean I want them to look super jank or weird but agreeable when I do have to have their head exposed (The hat may look silly but the stats are soo much better!)

So just a thought I had for a post. I know many players run through 'alts' so they can play the game at every level, and while I used to be somewhat of an 'alt-aholic', Nowadays I just play the game and see how far I can go with the one character.

I don't feel attached to any one character enough to feel like I am 'killing' the character if I quit the game but if the game no longer interests me than I try and put the character somewhere fitting before I log off for that long duration.

Again, not attached but then again the Toy Story mentality of 'What if they 'were' alive?' comes to mind and I do want to give the character I created at least a medium of a nice spot to log out of.

See how this is a bit of a conundrum? Might be looking too much into it but there it is.

How attached do you get with characters you create? Do you name the character after yourself (Username) or do you roleplay a story, ambitions, motivation, playstyle, and cater those elements to their look and name?

It's an interesting concept that can get interesting the more involved the player gets but also somewhat limiting in terms of game content being stuck to one character

Would love to hear any feedback or thoughts.

Thank you for reading.

Happy Gaming!
