Hood disappeared without leaving a trail. But sometimes the absence of evidence becomes evidence of its own.

There are places where getting lost is simple.

You take the wrong road.

You miss a turn.

You wander too far from somewhere familiar.

Then there are places where the very idea of being lost begins to lose its meaning.

How can you be lost when you no longer know which reality you are standing in?

How can you follow someone who apparently leaves no tracks?

And what happens when the one object you know they were walking toward turns out to be just as impossible to identify as they are?

Welcome back to the Reality Drift.

This time, three travelers are following a trail that doesn't seem to exist.

British Baby Lady.

Nigerian Baby Lady.

And Outback Jack.

They know who they are looking for.

Hood.

The problem is that Hood has disappeared.

And the only lead they have left is a tower on the horizon.

---

He Was Right There

It happened quickly.

One moment Hood was ahead of them.

The next, he wasn't.

There was no flash of light.

No visible portal.

No dramatic explosion tearing open the sky.

No warning.

Hood had simply continued doing what Hood always seemed to do.

Walking.

That was perhaps the strangest part.

Ever since the Reality Drift had thrown everyone into places they did not understand, Hood had behaved differently from almost everyone around him.

Others reacted.

Hood proceeded.

Others questioned.

Hood walked.

Others tried to determine where they were.

Hood behaved like the answer was irrelevant.

Or perhaps like he already knew.

And after everything that had happened, that distinction was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

British Baby Lady stared down the dusty road.

Alien machinery stood beside weathered frontier structures. Strange architecture rose behind buildings that looked as though they belonged in an old Western settlement. Beyond them, enormous structures reached into an unfamiliar sky.

This reality looked like several different civilizations had somehow been built on top of one another.

But Hood had moved through it without hesitation.

Until now.

British Baby Lady looked toward the place where he had been.

“He was right in front of us.”

Outback Jack checked his equipment.

“Not anymore.”

There was no point pretending they had another lead.
