AI as coworkers – what does the future look like?

I think it's interesting how we've gone from discussing how AI will take jobs, to how it will be a coworker.
Of course, a lot of people still make strong arguments for AI taking jobs, and I'm not here to argue against those claims.
If I dare to comment on that sentiment, I'd say that there's credible evidence that AI will indeed take jobs through intelligence-based automation.
We ought to understand that as AI systems become more capable of handling tasks that previously required human judgment, analysis, writing, research, and even decision-making, it's reasonable to expect certain roles to be reduced, transformed, or eliminated altogether.
But at the same time, it creates demand for new roles where the shift to putting AI in workspaces triggers a need for people specializing in the oversight of AI-generated or AI-executed work.
In part, this is actually a basic case of humans working alongside AI.
The nature of the work changes with the advancements in this technology. Instead of doing every task manually, we have humans filling roles where they may now be responsible for directing an AI system, reviewing its output, correcting mistakes, validating decisions, or making sure that what the system produces actually aligns with the objectives of the organization.
What we are currently stuck with is a situation where calling AI a coworker is not necessarily about pretending that AI has become equivalent to a human employee but more about recognizing that AI is increasingly becoming part of the workflow itself.
Now let's leave the basics, and let's shift attention to where the broader industry is at when it comes to coworking with AI.
Working with Agents
In the basic level, we look at AI as some chatbot you prompt at and then look over the response, but that's not a design system that's suitable for handling work at scale.
So, the sentiment around AI coworkers isn't about chatbots.
People are increasingly delegating multi-step work to agents rather than merely asking ChatGPT questions. Research is explicitly framing agents as the virtual coworkers.
So, we're dealing with a shift towards an economic environment where agents contribute to significant value generation.
This changes everything, not just work.
Products will be designed around enabling agentic usage.
This means that AI effectively moves from being in the shadows to playing a critical role in both sides of every trade or economic activity.
There will be an agent within a flow leading to a sell event, and also one in a purchase event. It doesn't matter if it is goods that are being traded or services, every flow will have an agent embedded in the flow.
This is what the future looks like.
The broader shift is that AI becomes an added layer in every value flow that either reduces costs as the immediate benefits or increases income.
