The Gospel of Luke recounts a miracle performed by Jesus at the beginning of his preaching in Galilee, and that sign is the miraculous catch of fish. This story is also told with other words in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. And it is in this story that the lives of Simon, John, and James became intertwined with Jesus, later becoming his disciples. And the Gospel of Luke relates that Jesus approached the Sea of Galilee to teach the word of God, and there he saw two fishing boats, got into one, asked that the boat move a little away from the shore, and began to teach. And the gospel relates that when Jesus finished teaching, he said to Simon: "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch" Luke 5:4. To which Simon replied: "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets" Luke 5:5. The Gospel continues its account and explains that the boat's nets were so full of fish that they almost broke, and then great fear gripped all those near Jesus because of the number of fish they had caught. And then Jesus said to Simon: "Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people" Luke 5:10. And after this, the gospel relates that Simon, James, and John abandoned everything and decided to follow Jesus. With this story, the gospel teaches what the attitude of those who want to enter the Kingdom of God should be. John, Simon, and James, when they recognized the Lord, left everything, because Jesus was the most important thing. Those who wish to follow Jesus cannot look back, like the rich young man who asked Jesus about eternal life, and looked back because he loved riches, and could not follow Jesus. On the other hand, Jesus was clear, the divine master prophesied to them that they would be fishers of men, that is, that they would be his disciples and teach the Kingdom of God to others. The Kingdom of God, as it happened to Simon, John, and James, is a call and a grace to which men must respond in order to attain eternal life and rescue others from oppression and hopelessness. That is the true spiritual meaning of the miraculous catch of fish.
