The advice in the Book of Proverbs should not be taken lightly, because it is an expression of that eternal wisdom of God. And this is so because truth exists, the truth is precision and accuracy, and this truth translates into principles or maxims of action for daily life. And the proverbs in the sapiential literature are exactly that. But there's something else to consider as well. The science of living, expressed in valuable advice, should not be taken as a cause for contempt or laughter, because, as Solomon demonstrated in his trial of the two prostitutes (1 Kings 3:16-28) or Daniel in the trial of Susanna (Daniel 13:47-64), problems are not solved with good intentions, with faith, or with values, but with the science that comes from the highest. The desire to be instructed, and this is the spiritual gift of fear of God, is the beginning of the understanding of that science underlying all the sapiential literature of the Bible. And so, the Book of Proverbs teaches a valuable piece of spiritual advice to keep in mind: "Showing respect to the LORD brings true life—if you do it, you can relax without fear of danger" Proverbs 19:23. Showing respect for God means making sin an abomination; it means understanding with the heart that one cannot embark on the path of error. An example of what it means to respect God was Job in the Bible, who, put to the test through a series of misfortunes, never uttered an offense against his creator. And the proverb teaches that the fear or respect of God leads men to true life. What the proverb is saying is that the contemplative life is a fruit of fear. Or, in other words, when a person lives with true fear, this spiritual gift, through its progressive nature, leads to that true knowledge of the divine and the invisible. And not only that, the proverb teaches that respect or fear of God frees man from all evil, and this is so for a reason taught by another proverb: "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day" Proverbs 4:18. As the Book of Proverbs teaches, then, the fear or respect for God is the greatest treasure a man can have, more than any material possession.
