Paul, among other things, was the apostle of the spiritual gifts and grace. And this spiritual truth can be seen in one of his most important spiritual letters in the New Testament, his First Epistle to the Corinthians. The apostle Paul had arrived in the city of Corinth on his second missionary journey after many problems that threatened his life and integrity. But there in the city of Corinth, he stayed for a year and a half, and was able to preach successfully and form an important Christian community, as the Book of Acts relates. But after leaving Corinth, some disturbances began within the community, so he sent them one of his first letters. And one of the main themes of this letter is the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church through charisms or spiritual gifts. This is why he wrote the following words at the beginning of his teaching on the importance of grace in the Church: "Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed" 1 Corinthians 12:1. And he reminded them that while they were pagans they did not know what the perfections that God gives to those who accept faith in Jesus meant. And then he continued his teaching and explained how the grace bestowed by the sacrement of baptism moves Christians to speak of Jesus: "I want you to know that if you are led by God's Spirit, you will say that Jesus is Lord, and you will never curse Jesus" 1 Corinthians 12:3. Because the gifts, Paul continued, although diverse, all proceed from the same Spirit, that is, from the same wisdom of God, and it is through the fruitfulness of the gifts that believers in Jesus can attain the gift of eternal life and equality with the saints. But furthermore, the apostle Paul added, the spiritual gifts serve to build up the common body that is the Church and communion, the life in common. And all the charisms, Paul concluded, are summed up in one teaching, love: "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love" 1 Corinthians 13:13.
