There is nothing better than spending a weekend with family, surrounded by lush greens and a flowing river, sharing an incredible traditional feast. This weekend, we decided to celebrate with a spread that embraced the bold, rustic flavors of Tharu style cooking!
First up, the ultimate refresher: a huge glass of Chilled Beer. You can literally see the condensation on the glass-it was the absolute perfect companion to the spicy, robust flavors that were about to hit the table.
To start, we had a plate of incredibly crispy Fried Prawns. In true Tharu style, these were likely freshly caught river prawns, fried until dark and crunchy with a deep, savory, and slightly spicy taste. They were dangerously addictive and the perfect bar snack.
The main event was the star of the meal: Duck Choila and Duck Gravy. While Choila is traditionally Newari, this version was infused with an authentic Tharu twist. Prepared with pungent mustard oil, green chilies, and a blend of whole rustic spices, the duck was perfectly charred and smoky. The dry, fiery Choila paired beautifully with the rich, flavorful Duck Gravy on the side-perfect for sopping up.
To balance the heat and soak up all that incredible sauce, we had a big bowl of Cheura (Beaten Rice). A staple in the Tharu belt of the Terai region, cheura is light and fluffy, making it the ideal traditional base for the heavy, spicy meats. The pickled radish and carrot on the side added a refreshing, tangy crunch to every bite.
Sitting by the riverside with my family, enjoying this beautifully spiced Tharu-inspired feast, is what life is all about.
Happy weekend, Hive! Have you ever tried authentic Tharu style duck or river prawns?
