TODAYS ART PROJECT - Video Embedded below Hey guys, today's little post is just to do with creating my colouring pages for my colouring book that I am creating.
Yes, I am still doing the dance koala based colouring book with the text-based colouring pages. However, I have made a little side quest to do some cute, funny, slightly neurodivergent colouring pages as well.
So I'm just going to talk about this project today and go through the exact methods on Procreate and some of the things that I use in Procreate to create these little colouring pages.
PROJECT BRIEF A 5 page mini set - featuring 5 funny cartoon colouring pages in a slightly neuro-divergent theme.
So this mini set is five pages of colouring pages, which have a theme that are slightly neurodivergent funnies.
So, as someone who is very creative and knows a lot of people who understand exactly how these things are, the pages are based on topics such as the following: praying that someone is going to text you and cancel the plans for the afternoon, being overstimulated and everything is just too loud and you need to hibernate, turning off the big light, finding things in odd places, starting new side quests.
I mean, let's face it, this mini set is a side quest, in my opinion, as I am supposed to be doing everything but creating a new mini set today.
So that is what this little wee colouring set is about.
WORKFLOW
I work in Procreate, as a rule. I have an idea in my head about what I want to create. I create a layer in Procreate for a quick rough sketch. I tighten this sketch in another layer that you don't actually see in the Procreate video export, because I use a fantastic little feature, which is called adding a hidden layer into the video. So I can see the hidden layer while I'm drawing, but you can't see it in the video. It's actually pretty cool.
( if you want to try this, when you click add a file, you swipe to the left and it will say insert hidden file) its awesome.
So after I've done my sketch, I then do another layer where I move some of the elements around and redraw the elements and pull them all in and those sorts of things. I like them all to have the same line weight, so I don't like pulling in art that I've drawn from another colouring page into the one I'm working on, because then all the line art is, you know, different sizes and things, and that just annoys me.
So once I've got that all in there, I generally redraw things and create the final layer that you can see. And then I add the colour layer.
So to do this, I actually create a new document in Procreate so I don't muck up my line art layer by accident. I've done it before. And I import JPEG of the line art, duplicate that layer to create two layers of the same line art.
And then the one that's on the bottom, I change this to reference layer and set it to multiply, and then I add layers underneath for the colour, and I drag and drop colours in and it will just fill into those lines, which is really handy, also meaning then that you don't end up with lines drawn over the top of your line art. That's why you have that second complete line art over the top of this reference multiply layer.
Once I have done all the colour, I add a shading layer. This is not supposed to be extremely fancy, and if it was supposed to be fancy, I'd be doing separate colours on each colour layer rather than just doing a shaded layer over the lot, which is what I've done in this.
Basically underneath said reference layer, but over the colour layers, you create a new layer, which is set to multiply and set to about 15% opacity, and then I chose a slightly grainy brush and a brush that doesn't have any pressure sensitivity in it, and I just drew in some shading areas over the colour page just to add a little bit of dimension to the flat kawaii line art.
What will i do with this mini set when done
The plan for this mini set, is to upload to Etsy and see if i can sell some. The comics are a bit cute. So hopefuly they sell. I will link the upload process when we get there.
anyway this has been a fun SIDE QUEST.
Today is a busy day, so i really should go and do some work as i have PT this afternoon and long ballet runs this arvo.
Chat latter!!!
