Boycott the Big Ten!

It was a very controversial weekend in the world of college football. I'm not going to write a really long post on it, but I think I need to at least address it here. Sadly, despite the title, I probably won't be boycotting the Big Ten conference, but after all the stuff that went down on Saturday night, It really makes me want to. In case you missed it, Western Michigan University was basically manhandling the number 16 ranked University of Michigan Wolverines. It's not that things like this haven't happened in the past, but typically, these games aren't supposed to go this way.

I've talked about it before, but these "cupcake" games typically see a large power conference university team taking on a smaller regional university for "practice" in the early season. The big university gets to try out new things and see what works there and the smaller university gets paid a hefty sum of money to get their butts kicked.

Well, sometimes like we saw on Saturday night, it doesn't go according to plan. With very little time left on the clock (actually it was zero, everyone knows it was zero, let's just say it was zero), Western Michigan had a 12 to 7 lead over U of M and what should have been the victory.

However, although the clock said zero, and like I said, everyone saw it, they decided to put one more second on the clock and that allowed U of M to throw a hail mary pass that supposedly won them the game 13 to 12.

Here's the problem, even if the officials did do the right thing (according to them they did, but of course they wouldn't admit it if they didn't), it's just too convenient for them. The fact is, this decision will always be tainted now because there is the clear evidence that the Big Ten and college football as a whole is too scared to lose money by seeing one of their powerhouse fan bases lose, than to actually do the right thing.

We have seen time and again how U of M and other similar schools tend to get preferential treatment when it comes to punishments, rankings, and calls like this one.

I think for me, the biggest thing this signals is the fact that even college sports aren't immune to cheating. I mean, we all know it happens in this new world of sports betting, but underneath it all, we kind of hoped that college sports were still "clean".

It's almost as though our innocence has been taken from us now and that really puts a sour light on these sports that we have come to love. You now have to watch it through the lens of knowing that they are going to do what is best for their bottom line and brand most of all. Even Western Michigan seems to now be hesitantly accepting the decision. I wonder what they were threatened with by The Big Ten or the NCAA to fall into line.

Either way, I think WMU deserves a lot of credit. You played your hearts out and in the mind of a lot of people, you won that game no matter what the final score says.
