Uncovering a Champion

It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks, but yesterday the book closed on this years Little League World Series. It wasn't a contest without controversy, thankfully, most of that got taken care of before we got to the heart of the tournament. With all the stuff in the qualifiers, there was plenty of possibility for things to go off the rails. Thankfully, that didn't happen and besides some really great baseball, we had a pretty exciting tournament.
You might remember last weekend we were looking at the quarterfinal games between Japan and Curacao, and the Great Lakes and Mountain teams. Things didn't go so well for my Great Lakes team from Ohio when the Mountain team from Nevada embarrassed them 12 to 2 in a powerful showing by the team. I didn't get a chance to watch the game because I was in the middle of the woods somewhere, but it appears as though it was quite lopsided.
Meanwhile, on the International side of the bracket, Curacao had a nice shut out victory over Japan 4 to 0. This set things up for the final games on Sunday.
The third place game was played between Japan and the Great Lakes. It was looking like the Great Lakes were going to pull out a two to zero victory, but then Japan battled back and due to some impressive bunting, they were able to win the third place game 3 to 2.
You should never underestimate the power of a good bunt at this level of the game. I remember a softball game my niece played in where they just couldn't hit the ball. Every swing was either a fly out or a strike out. So they started bunting and the funny thing is, the defense just couldn't handle it. They ended up racking up points the old fashioned way and actually won the game.
Meanwhile, in the Championship game, the Mountain team came out to a quick lead, but then Curacao started to impose their will on them like they have so many other teams in the tournament. Nevada kind of fell apart as Curacao racked up run after run taking the title in a dominant 11 to 2 run rule victory.
There wasn't much room for controversy there, they were just a really good team, though their clean up pitcher did look like he could be in high school... :) Just kidding. Congrats to Curacao.
