Volley On

As we close the door on youth baseball and softball, we need to turn our attention to the fall sports that are ramping up. Sure, there is still major league baseball going on, but I am going to push that off until tomorrow so I can talk about university volleyball. I kind of missed the fact that it had started already with the Little League World Series going on. With all of my attention focused on that, I haven't been doing a very good job keeping track of volleyball or football. In fact, I don't think I could even tell you when the first Michigan State University game is this year, and that is really sad.
For all I know, they could have started already and I totally missed it!
Turns out I am safe. MSU has their first game against Toledo this Friday. I'll try to be sure and catch it.
Meanwhile, like I said, college volleyball has been going on for a few weekends now. It started on August 21st with a tournament happening somewhere. Don't ask me where.
The big news is, Nebraska is the number 1 team in the nation again, picking up where they left off last season. Unfortunately, they didn't win the tournament last season, but they had a pretty amazing season that saw them in the top spot for much of the year. Right below them is Pittsburgh who have been a known powerhouse in the sport for years now. In fact, if you just do a random search for "college volleyball" on Google, I am sure at least on of the photos will be of a Pitt player.
In third place we have Kentucky, then Stanford, and finally Wisconsin to round out the top five. The rest of the top ten is made up of Louisville, Arizona State, SMU, Texas, and Creighton.
Filling in the remainder of the field, we have Minnesota, Texas A&M, Penn State, Purdue, Southern Cal, Kansas, Florida, TCU, North Carolina, Baylor, Indiana, Tennessee, Colorado, BYU, and finally Oregon.
It's really nice to see so many Big Ten schools represented in the top 25.
Meanwhile, it looks like our nieces team has been struggling a lot at the beginning of this season. They appear to be on a five set losing streak dropping some tough games to teams like Rochester Community College 3 to 0, Highland Community College 3 to 0, Northeast Community College 3 to 0, McHenry Count College 3 to 1, and Schoolcraft College 3 to 1.
It actually looks like our niece has only been able to play one game so far, which is kind of a bummer, but also to be expected when you are a freshman. You have to work your way up to being a starter.
She will get there!
