There are places that, at first glance, strike us as beautiful because of the stunning views they offer, and we may even have known them since childhood, as is the case here; this place is a very popular and busy spot in my city, as it’s one of the city’s natural lungs. Many people visit it daily—families, friends, couples—to play sports, have picnics, play games, and engage in other activities, or simply to take a walk and clear their heads from the hustle and bustle and stress of my beautiful city, Caracas, Venezuela. I’m talking about Parque del Este, or Francisco de Miranda Park, as it’s called today.

After this brief introduction, I’ll tell you my terrifying paranormal story; but let’s go back about 18 years, to when my middle daughter (I have three children) was about three months old. Ever since she was born, she’d been a rather restless baby who kept our family on edge, as nothing seemed to calm her down back then. There was only one thing she liked besides being held: going for a walk in her stroller. It was as if the breeze and the monotonous rocking motion of the stroller’s movement relaxed her and, as a result, calmed her down until she fell fast asleep, giving us, her caregivers, the chance to relax and spend some time together.

That weekend—specifically on a Saturday—I remember that my oldest daughter and I were at home, overwhelmed by the new routine of having a baby at home, so we said to each other, “Let’s go to the park with the baby,” taking advantage of the fact that the three of us were home alone, since my husband was on call at work. So we gathered everything we needed—the diaper bag, the baby’s stroller—and headed to the park we’d always visited. When we arrived, we set out on our walk, happy to breathe fresh air and walk freely with our baby; it was a beautiful, sunny day, full of people coming and going...

But as in any place, there are always spots or sections of the park that are particularly secluded… and before we knew it, we found ourselves in an area full of trees with a rather lonely path, but we didn’t realize that until, strangely enough, we didn’t see anyone around. I remember looking around and thinking it was odd that there was no one in such a crowded place. Just as I was thinking that, we saw a woman approaching in a park uniform—one of those who make sure everything stays in order among the people and the animals, since there are animals there too, as it also serves as a zoo.

At first, her presence didn’t seem strange to us at all, until she walked right past us… At that moment, I felt a rather tense sensation, as if I were on guard… In that instant, both my daughter and I felt intimidated and utterly terrified, because when we looked at this woman’s face, we could see that she had a mocking smile and was staring at us with a gaze that exuded pure evil… but what made us literally run away was that, upon looking at her more closely and facing her directly, we realized her eyes were completely black; they had no whites at all; they were like two black spotlights staring at us with utter malice. But what shocked and terrified us the most was that she stopped to stare intently at my baby...

In that instant, my oldest daughter and I took each other’s hands, grabbed my youngest daughter’s stroller, and bolted, as if our lives depended on it. Fortunately, my little girl was fast asleep when all this happened, and then—just like in the movies—people started walking past us as if nothing had happened; I remember them looking at us curiously; I imagine the fear was evident on our faces. I have to say that we lost all desire to keep walking. From that moment on, even though we’ve continued to visit that park over the years, we no longer feel the same sense of security there as before; we now know that even in the most beautiful places, evil can lurk...
