¡Saludos, amigos!

When I started reading this post, [Being Happy… Are We Forcing Ourselves to Be Happy—Or to Be Better People? - Sunday Reflections on 7mo. Día](https://peakd.com/hive-131951/@emiliorios/ser-feliz-nos-estamos-obligando-a-serlo-o-ser-mejores-personas-reflexiones-de-domingo-en-7mo-dia-esen) by my friend @emiliorios; as I read about the topic, which addresses the urge many people have today to appear eternally happy and fulfilled, bordering on a fantasy world that only they believe in (in my personal opinion)—that’s the reality, because no one can live constantly with a happy smile on their lips, and the most absurd part is that everyone is expected to be constantly positive at all times, when real life isn’t like that.
Since we live through constant ups and downs—there are highs and lows—and we’re not always on top of the world, hahaha. We all go through different stages in our lives, circumstances, and situations that are often beyond our control, but what makes the difference is how we face them; and if, in the meantime, we need to take a break to feel our emotions and feelings, to recharge emotionally, that’s valid—it’s only human—but the important thing is to move forward after that and, in the meantime, cultivate our values, such as respect, empathy, honesty, kindness, among others, but above all, love, which is what makes this world go round.
Striving to be better every day, because everything we give comes back to us, whether good or bad; so we must strive to give our best, to try to be the best version of ourselves, in order to leave a beautiful legacy as a result—and to be clear that happiness consists only of small moments in our lives: being able to wake up every morning, hug our loved ones, be productive and creative, but above all, be the reason why someone felt better during their day. That’s what it’s all about, in my view.
Personally, I don’t believe in the kind of people who always have a smile on their faces, because that tells me there are things behind the scenes that I’m truly unaware of; therefore, I proceed with caution. This reminded me of a coworker who was an elevator operator in the building where I worked and was always “laughing”—but not out of the usual friendliness expected of her job; it was something out of the ordinary. I remember that once someone asked her, “You’re always so happy—don’t you have any problems?” Her response was more laughter; I remember thinking, “That’s strange—it’s not normal…”
And time confirmed it. Later I found out that the girl was suffering from quite severe depression, on top of a very difficult life situation, but trying so relentlessly to project happiness and well-being to the world all the time had ended up taking a heavy toll on her; she went on medical leave for quite a while, and when she returned, she was a different person—friendly, yes, but no longer constantly wearing that mask of happiness she’d been pretending to have. She was herself, and I liked that person better, because she was the real one. So here we can see just how bad things can get when you insist on being the embodiment of happiness and well-being.
It’s also true that we don’t have to be completely open with everyone, that we need to protect our personal space; that’s important, because it saves us from a lot of trouble. Likewise, we have to understand that not everyone deserves an explanation and that many people are going to think what they want anyway, regardless of what you do. So, in conclusion, we should do what’s best for us, nurture the good things we have, and keep learning what we’re missing; for me, that’s what life is all about. Cheers, friends!
