Fragments of Power: The Pact of the Two Sorceresses - A Splinterlands Tale! (Part II) [Eng/Esp]

That midday, all the streets were empty, the shops closed, and in the squares, only the cooing of pigeons flying toward the statues could be heard. Everyone was in the great coliseum of the Great Lowlands witnessing an unparalleled battle: two sorceresses who had once belonged to the same school of elemental arts now faced each other in the final of the Tournament of the Eternal Flame. Nessa not only wanted to prove that her journey of introspection, which led her to embrace dark magic, was the complement she needed to unleash her full potential, but also for the reward: the title of The Arcane, which was not just another title, but an artifact imbued with arcane magic that allowed her to channel magical energy. That was also the interest of her rival, Elandra; the title would grant her elementary school the prestige it had long since lost, and she wanted to be remembered as the sorceress who restored Alric Stormbringer's elementary school. In short, both sorceresses had a great deal at stake in this battle.

The two sorceresses faced each other in the center of the coliseum. The crowd remained silent.

Elandra was the first to attack. She raised her arms and summoned a tornado of fire and wind that whirled violently toward Nessa.

"Firestorm!" she shouted.

Nessa didn't move. At the last second, her staff struck the ground, and a wall of shadows rose before her, absorbing the fire and the tornado's onslaught.

"Is that all?" Nessa asked with feigned disappointment. "The volcanoes of Central Fire spew even hotter flames."

She counterattacked with a blast of violet energy that Elandra barely managed to dodge, rolling on the ground and dusting her dark robes.

The crowd roared.

This first display of power convinced both sorceresses that the battle would be decided in a final, decisive attack—all or nothing! In that brief moment, as they both channeled their energy, they had a short conversation:

"You know," Nessa said, lowering her guard, "we could have been friends. You and I were the best of our generation."

"We were," Elandra replied, also lowering her staff. "But you abandoned it all."

"I abandoned it because the rules suffocated me. Because I couldn't be myself within an order mired in archaic traditions and rules."

"And now," Elandra said bitterly, "what are you?"

Nessa smiled. And she answered with complete conviction:

"I am Nessa. Simply Nessa." And that's enough. Elandra gripped her staff.

"Then, Nessa, allow me to show you the power of Alric's Legendary School of Archmages!"

She raised her staff to the sky and summoned three elements simultaneously: water, earth, and air merged into a great serpent that illuminated the entire coliseum.

"Mystic Scaleweaver!" she shouted, unleashing the ultimate attack. Nessa felt the power approaching. It was immense. It was devastating. It was... what would have been hers had she remained at the elemental school.

But she had chosen a different path.

She raised her staff and whispered:

"And I show you the power of shadows!"

Her staff exploded into a sphere of pure darkness that absorbed the light of the cataclysm, the energy of the elements, even sound. For three eternal seconds, all was silent, and then it emerged! The Djinn Jolius Blast, raising a long, heavy, flaming sword, lunged with great fury at the Saurian summoned by Elandra; the clash was imminent!

The impact was so violent that the stands trembled. When the smoke cleared, Elandra lay exhausted in the arena.

Nessa had done it. Her Djinn Jolius possessed the ability to absorb a significant portion of elemental magic and unleash a devastating counterattack by activating its second ability, Enrage.

The crowd fell silent. Would Nessa finish off her opponent, as was the custom in the great coliseum?

Nessa had done it. Her Djinn Jolius had the ability to absorb a significant portion of elemental magic and execute a devastating counterattack by activating its second ability, Enrage.

The crowd fell silent. Would Nessa finish off her opponent, as was the rule of the great coliseum?

Nessa took a few steps toward her opponent. Instead of a vengeful or mocking look, her face was the same as the Nessa Elandra had known in her early training days—the face of a friend. She extended her hand and helped her to her feet. They gazed at each other for a long moment. Two opposing worlds. Two conflicting philosophies.

“So what now?” Nessa asked.

Elandra pondered for a moment. Then, with an unexpected gesture, she removed her black robe and let it fall to the ground.

“Now,” she said, revealing her bare arms for the first time, “perhaps I won’t embrace the darkness as you have, but I can’t forget that I once had a friend, and I’m glad to know I still do.”

The crowd erupted in cheers. Not just for the battle, but for what that gesture signified.

Nessa had managed to smooth over her differences with her former best friend in the ways of sorcery, proving that their decisions to understand elemental/dark magic were complementary. Now, she held in her hands the great title of The Arcane, one of the artifacts she needed to activate her plot of land in Praetoria. So she set off once more for the Shimmering Coast to channel her new title into her lands and begin producing special midnight potions, which would allow her to summon units of much greater rarity and quality. She walked with a firm step, her obsidian staff vibrating gently in her hand as if recognizing the path home. She had been traveling for three days from the Great Lowlands Coliseum, and although fatigue was beginning to weigh on her shoulders, a smile spread across her face.

Nessa stopped in the middle of the path.

Her staff vibrated with urgency, not familiarity. Something was wrong.

Then she heard it.

A scream.

It wasn't a cry of pain, but a cry of battle. A cry from someone defending themselves with all their might, but beginning to falter. Nessa didn't hesitate. She ran through the trees, her staff gleaming with a violet light, leaping over roots and dodging low branches. The forest opened up before her as if recognizing her urgency.

And then she saw the scene: in a clearing illuminated by the waning moon, a sorceress in an emerald-green robe was fighting desperately against three demons. They were twisted creatures, with coal-black skin, bone claws, and yellow eyes that gleamed with malice. The region where Nessa was building her cabin was inhabited by creatures that, while for her they were nothing more than a minor nuisance, for a sorcerer of average skill they represented a formidable challenge.

Nessa needed only two moves.

She began by striking the ground with her staff, and a wave of darkness spread from her feet, enveloping the clearing like a midnight blanket. The demons shrieked as they felt the dark magic caress their bodies.

Then she raised her free hand and whispered,

"Shadows, devour them!"

Three tentacles of violet energy erupted from her palm, wrapping themselves around each demon. The monsters struggled, but they only tore at the air; they couldn't escape.

"Now, elemental sorceress!" Nessa shouted.

The woman in the green robe reacted instantly. She raised her orb and summoned a storm of razor-sharp leaves that whirled like blades, slicing through the trapped demons. The monsters let out an agonizing shriek before disintegrating into ash.

The clearing fell silent.

Nessa lowered her staff, approaching the other sorceress.

"Are you alright?" “—she asked. The girl leaned on her staff, touching the wound on her shoulder. She had short, red hair, gathered in a braid that reached her waist. Her eyes, a deep green like ancient moss, gazed at Nessa with gratitude and wonder.

“I’m… fine,” she replied, trying to smile. “Thank you. I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t come.”
