Desde ambos lados del espejo // From both sides of the mirror

>At some point, we’ve all felt targeted by words that—whether directly or indirectly—point to us in some way. Within the social circle that’s part of our daily lives, it’s impossible to escape this kind of thing, so the best approach is to think about how we can handle situations where we feel we’re being targeted or even attacked by someone else’s opinion. It may not be within our power to prevent these things from happening to some extent, but what will always depend on us is the attitude and response each of us chooses to show.
>One of the first things I’d think is, “Why take something personally?”—especially if the intention isn’t entirely clear. Sometimes, we might be too quick to read into something that was simply a meaningless comment with no deeper meaning. If we’re sensitive to certain words or expressions, perhaps deep down we’re already harboring a certain fear about something that truly affects us but that we might not want to address or deal with at that moment. Sometimes, someone who takes something personally doesn’t hesitate to express their discomfort before making sure that what was said was actually directed at them.

>All of this often seems so normal that sometimes, before expressing an idea or point of view, a person will preface it with phrases like “Don’t take this the wrong way” or “It’s nothing personal,” as if trying to forestall a possible argument that might cause the listener to tune out. But to be honest, I think we say that because something tells us that a specific person might feel singled out by what we’re about to say. Whenever I see someone say that, I feel that’s when I need to pay the most attention to what they’re about to say—not that I never do—but such a warning isn’t without reason, especially when it comes to matters and conversations of greater importance.
>Taking something personally doesn’t necessarily always have to be about us, and in some cases, it’s because we need to stand up for others. Once again, we should consider how sensitive we’ll be to what others say and how we’ll react, without letting this bring out something in us that we can’t control or that might make the situation worse—and this is clearly something to keep in mind when we’re convinced that we’re facing some injustice or untruth that obviously triggers a reaction in us. That’s why it’s understandable that many people feel that staying silent is a viable option but never the most reliable solution.

>In contrast, we cannot expect that the best approach is to show minimal interest or total indifference to what others may express. It is impossible to avoid these situations, especially if you regularly interact with a circle of acquaintances and friends. Many recognize that it is even reckless and unethical to stand by while someone says something about which we are in a better position to explain and clarify the ideas being raised. Isolating ourselves is not a recommended approach either, because although it might serve as protection, it would also be a kind of refuge that would deprive us of knowing how to respond to those things that tend to arise completely spontaneously. Social balance and a friendly, open approach to communication are, in my opinion, what can help us handle such situations.
>In this regard, the key is that harmony we can all achieve between what we say and what we hear, without expecting any kind of defense that might even influence what others might say. In the worst-case scenario, the choice is within our reach: not to give in to our sensitivities, but rather to respond with the best version of ourselves that each of us can develop on our own.
