Measures I take when I have to leave my pets alone for long hours (ENG-ESP)

--- --- I've been fortunate to have pets and be able to spend as much time with them as possible. My dog and cat are rarely alone; we keep each other company almost all day. But in recent months, I've had to be away for long hours and, in some cases, days. I confess that every time I have to do that, my heart breaks because my dog is getting old and my cat gets stressed. Because of this, I've had to take some measures so that in my absence, they don't feel so alone and their needs are still met.
Having someone you trust who can take care of them while you're away: It's very important to have someone willing to look after my pets while I'm away, or at least have neighbors I trust enough to give them the keys to my house so they can check on my pets two or three times a day and help them with whatever they need. Thank God, so far, my sister and my neighbor have helped me with this. I give them all the instructions, and they gladly help me. There are some places I can't take my pets with me right now, but if I could, I wouldn't hesitate; I'd take them everywhere.
Leaving fresh water: They need to stay hydrated, and water is essential. I never leave home without leaving their water bowls full. It's important to change their water every day.
Feeding: My dog usually eats twice a day, in the morning and at night, and he always has a banana in the mid-afternoon. He's allergic to processed foods, so his food is homemade. If I have to be out all day, I give him a good portion of his food before I leave. If I have to be gone for a couple of days, I leave his food prepared in the refrigerator, portioned out so that whoever is going to help me only has to serve it. As for my cat, her food is usually homemade too. She loves red meat and eats several small portions a day, but when I have to be away for a long time, I buy her processed food and put several portions in strategic places. She loves this type of food, and thank God she hasn't had any negative health reactions, although I only give it to her on rare occasions.
Let them sense my presence, even when I'm not there: Our pets love our scent, so it's always a good idea to leave some clothing, towels, sheets, blankets, etc., within their reach when we leave, so they can smell us.
Clear windows: I have a kitten, and cats love to look out at the world, so it's always important to have a clear window they can see out. My kitten, thankfully, has two large windows to look out from and entertain herself for a while. It's very important to keep those windows secure so they can't get out.
Leaving the bedroom door open: My pets go everywhere in our home; they're very free there, and one of their favorite places is the bedroom. It's where we spend a lot of time; it's cozy and cool. My dog loves to sleep under my bed, and my cat loves to sleep on top of the bed, feeling the warmth of the blanket. That's why I think it's great to leave the bedroom door open so they can continue to have the freedom to choose where they want to be.
Make the environment as safe as possible: My dog is old and usually just sleeps and eats, but my cat is very young and quite curious, so I always have to remove things from her reach that could be dangerous, for example, glass objects, very small objects that she could put in her mouth, turn off the main water valve in case there's a leak and the apartment doesn't flood, and make sure windows and doors are tightly closed. I remember a while ago I was careless and left the door open, and when I got home my dog wasn't there. You can't imagine how awful I felt when I saw he was gone. Thank God we found him at the entrance of our building. Now every time I leave, I make sure everything is properly closed so they can't get out onto the street; that would be very dangerous.
Clean Litter Box: This is essential for cats. They are very clean and like to do their business in a clean place. That's why I always clean the litter box at least three times a day and give instructions to the person who will kindly help me so that they also keep the litter box clean, so that Mitchu, my kitten, can do her business with confidence.
+ He tenido la dicha de tener mascotas y poder estar con ellas el mayor tiempo posible, mi perrito y mi gata pocas veces están solos, nos hacemos compañía casi todo el día, pero en los últimos meses he tenido que ausentarme por largas horas y en algunos casos días, les confieso que cada vez que tengo que hacer eso se me parte el corazón, porque mi perrito ya está anciano y mi gatita se estresa, debido a eso he tenido que tomar algunas medidas para que en mi ausencia, ellos sientan que no están tan solos y aún tengan cubiertas sus necesidades.
+ Tener a alguien de confianza que pueda atenderles en esos días que pueda estar ausente: Es muy importante contar con alguien que esté dispuesto a quedarse cuidando de mis mascotas por esos días que estaré ausente, o por lo menos contar con vecinos que le tengamos suficiente confianza para dejarles las llaves de nuestro hogar y puedan acercarse por lo menos 2 o 3 veces al día para ver como están nuestras mascotas, y puedan atenderles en lo que necesiten, gracias a Dios hasta ahora, mi hermana y mi vecina me han ayudado con esto, yo les dejo todas las indicaciones y ellas con mucho gusto me han colaborado, hay lugares que en este momento no puedo llevar a mis animalitos conmigo, pero si pudiera no lo pensaría dos veces, me los llevaría para todos lados.
+ Dejar agua fresca: ellos necesitan estar siempre hidratados y el agua es primordial, nunca salgo de casa sin antes dejarle sus envases llenos de agua, es importante cambiarle el agua todos los días.
+ Alimentación: Normalmente mi perrito come dos veces al día, en la mañana, en la noche y no falta una porción de cambur a media tarde, él es alérgico a los alimentos procesados, así que su comida es casera, si tengo que durar todo el día fuera de casa, antes de salir le sirvo una buena porción de su comida, si tengo que ausentarme un par de días, le dejo su comida preparada en la nevera, la guardo en porciones para que la persona que me va a ayudar solo tenga el trabajo de servirla, con respecto a mi gatita, normalmente su comida también es casera, a ella le encanta la carne roja, ella come varias veces al día en pequeñas porciones, pero cuando tengo que ausentarme por un largo periodo le compro comida procesada, le coloco varias porciones en lugares estratégicos, este tipo de comida a ella le encanta y gracias a Dios no ha tenido ninguna reacción negativa en su salud, aunque solo le doy esta comida en contadas ocasiones.
+ Que sientan mi presencia, aunque yo no esté: nuestras mascotas aman nuestro olor, por eso siempre es bueno que al salir dejemos al alcance de ellos algunas prendas de vestir o toalla, sabanas, cobijas, etc., que sientan nuestro olor.
+ Ventanas despejadas: tengo una gatita y a los mininos les encanta mirar el mundo exterior por eso siempre es importante tener alguna ventana despejada que ellos puedan ver hacia afuera, mi gatita gracias a Dios tiene dos grandes ventanas para poder mirar y entretenerse un rato, muy importante tener esas ventanas seguras para que ellos no se salgan.
+ Dejar las puertas del cuarto abierta: mis mascotas entran a todo lugar en nuestro hogar, alli son muy libres, y uno de los lugares favoritos de todos es el dormitorio, es el lugar en donde pasamos una gran parte de nuestro tiempo, es acogedor y fresco, a mi perrito le encanta dormir debajo de mi cama y a mi gatita le encanta dormir arriba de la cama sintiendo el calor de la cobija, por eso me parece estupendo dejar la puerta abierta del dormitorio para que ellos sigan teniendo esa libertad de escoger en donde quieren estar.
+ Dejar el entorno lo más seguro posible: Mi perrito esta anciano y normalmente lo que hace es dormir y comer, pero mi gatita está muy joven y es bastante curiosa, así que siempre tengo que estar quitando cosas de su alcance que puedan resultar peligrosas, por ejemplo objetos de vidrios, objetos muy pequeños que se puedan llevar a la boca, cerrar la llave de paso principal del agua por si hay alguna fuga no se inunde el apartamento, dejar ventanas y puertas bien cerradas, recuerdo que hace un tiempo me descuidé y dejé la puerta abierta, resulta que cuando llegué a casa mi perrito no estaba, no se imaginan lo horrible que me sentí al ver que se había ido, gracias a Dios lo encontramos en la entrada de nuestra residencia, ahora cada vez que salgo me aseguro que todo quede bien cerrado para que no se puedan salir a la calle, eso sería muy peligroso.
+ Arenero bien limpio: esto es primordial para los gatos, ellos son muy aseados y les gusta hacer su pipi y popo en un lugar bien limpio, por eso siempre por lo menos tres veces al día limpio el arenero y le doy indicaciones a la persona que amablemente me va a colaborar para que también mantenga el arenero limpio y mitchu, mi gatita haga sus necesidades con confianza.
These are some of the most important measures I usually take when I spend many hours away from home, whether I leave during the day and return at night, but especially now that I've had to be away for a few days.
