Blackbutt Creek new orchid finds - lady fingers and trapeze: August 26 2026

Published on HivePostify by @carrinm · Thu Aug 27 2026

Rainy start to the day. Checked the forecast - afternoon should be clearing. Did investing stuff - a lot to do after a bug options expiry.

Walked down to Blackbutt Creek to check on twice orchids - first signs of spring on the way - blossom time

Cloud clearing over the goof course - there is an access way through the course

First orchid check where the access path meets the firetrail - nodding greenhood spike emerging - just one

One bud emerging on the common ant orchid where the track drops down to the creek - only one bud bit there more leaves than last season

Lots of hypericum flowers

Sydney boronia

Woolsia pungens - a few hanging in

A few flowers emerging in a big colony of acianthus caudatus - bigger leaves than I have seen

Budding chiloglottis orchid - only clue to ID is the ruffled leaf edges

Maybe these - flowering lower down the track than last time - chiloglottis formicifera. Note the calli going down to the bottom edge of the labellum

Another angle

Front on

Small-leafed white beard

More chiloglottis formicifera up the track - this is the highest colony which flowers first

A big colony with at least flowers in frame

New mayfly orchid spot - acianthus caudatus

A bit of rain and there are leeches - tiny one picked off my pants - not had time to drill

This was part of the mission for the day - note- no calli beyond the centre line of the labellum. Growing in a big colony on the opposite side of the track to previous sighting. Good thing as the top side location has been trashed by the track work

First season sighting of chiloglottis trapeziformis. Name is from the way the labellum swings like a trapeze

A few ptersorylis concinna still going in the same spot - 4 orchids in 4 square metres

Over the shoulder shot shows the leaf of the chiloglottis - smooth edged

Sundew flower

There were visitors - posed and not on me - whew!

The bonus for the day - lady fingers orchid - not seen on this track before

Caladenia catenata

Successful walk with two new season finds and one budding

Cooked dinner for a friend - beef bourgignon - was yum. No photos This report was published via Actifit app ([Android](https://bit.ly/actifit-app) | [iOS](https://bit.ly/actifit-ios)).
