Pink caladenia orchids show up in Seven Mile Beach NP : August 28 2026

Have a weekend on the South Coast planned. Change to the start - meet my wife in Chatswood - car packed. She had docs to drop off and is meeting friends for coffee. Got the car packed and found a free place to park. Remembered as I drove that I had forgotten charging stuff. We had coffee and stopped at JB Hifi to cover that gap. Good drive down with a stop to buy fish and chips for lunch

.

Left me enough time to get on the bike to walk Seven Mile Beach NP - a few orchid targets. First up blunt-tipped greenhood next to were I acces the track

Twisted labellum confirms the ID - pterostylis curta

Matching rosette

Native violet for my granddaughter Violette

First of the new season finds in Seven Mile Beach are a confusing lot . Yellow tip. Green back. White calli in two rows but petals are pink - caladenia catenata. One guide book says seldom pink

A different type of confusing. Leaf is shaped like a helmet orchid and not quite like a native violet

Flower spike says not a helmet orchid. Height says maybe not a violet. Leaf shape too. Going to have to stick with that ID - native violet

Pea flower - twining glycine with buds above waiting to open. This is a place where one wants a proper macros lens and a tripod and more time for photos

Next up for the caladenia challenge - same yellow tip, same white calli, same green back. Also not white - caladenia catenata

Budding greenhood

This is where ID gets confusing - hybrid time - yellow tip, white calli, green back mostly, pink tip on column. But pink edging and some red in the column - most like a carnea cstenata hybrid. No carmine bands - closer to caladenia catenata

Made the turnaround point the nodding greenhood - pterostylis nutans - a bit further along from the last sighting

Matching rosette - pterostylis nutans

Pterostylis concinna on the way back - only a few flowers left. Front on shot shows the forked labellum well Disappointed to not find any pterostylis erecta or oblonnga - plenty in other years

Side on view - pterostylis concinna

Good ride-walk. Sure helps to be able to ride onto roads with little or no traffic and easy access to bushland. Forgot to stop the clock for the walk - yep did the 10k steps and 4ks cycling. Stopped at bottle shop on the way home - need red wine

Did cook dinner - photo in two parts for Vienna Schnitzel - prepared meat and flour first

Then egg yolk and bread crumbs. Add another 15 minutes cook once meat is coated. Used olive oil for the fry - under 5 minutes a side. Served with chips from lunch remnants and some veges - snybone - sliced frwen beans
