A busy week scaling into gold, silver and copper and hedging USD exposure with Canada listed mining stocks - gold, silver, copper.
Portfolio News
In a week where S&P 500 dropped 0.47% and Europe rose 0.47%, my pension portfolio rose 0.73%. Heavy lifting from ASX gold and uranium stocks accounting for more than half the gain.
Big movers of the week were Centauri Minerals (CENT.V) (58.6%), Articore Group (ATG.AX) (51.8%), AML3D (AL3.AX) (43.6%), Cauldron Energy (CXU.AX) (29.4%), Western Uranium & Vanadium Corp (WUC.CN) (27.8%), Evolution Energy Minerals (EV1.AX) (22.2%), Bannerman Energy (BMN.AX) (20.7%), Blue Star Helium (BNL.AX) (20%), Brightstar Resources (BTR.AX) (19.1%), Iondrive (ION.AX) (18.2%), NICO Resources (NC1.AX) (18.2%), Elevate Uranium (EL8.AX) (18%), Atomic Eagle (AEU.AX) (17.4%), WhiteHawk (WHK.AX) (16.7%), Silex Systems (SLX.AX) (16.6%), Honey Badger Silver (TUF.V) (16.3%), Atha Energy Corp (SASK.V) (16.1%), Liberty Financial Group (LFG.AX) (15.3%), Pilbara Gold (PGL.AX) (15.1%), Strategic Minerals Plc (SML.L) (14.9%), Lindsay Australia (LAU.AX) (14.8%), Ramsay Health Care (RHC.AX) (14.5%), Aeris Resources (AIS.AX) (14.3%), Alligator Energy (AGE.AX) (14.3%), Azincourt Energy Corp (AAZ.V) (14.3%), Cettire (CTT.AX) (14.3%), Deep Yellow (DYL.AX) (13.2%), Solstice Advanced Materials (SOLS) (13.1%), F4 Uranium Corp (FFU.V) (13%), Silver Crown Royalties (SCRI.NE) (12.1%), Aldebaran Resources (ALDE.V) (12%), Orpheus Uranium (ORP.AX) (12%), Paladin Energy (PDN.AX) (11.7%), GrainCorp (GNC.AX) (11.4%), Resimac Group (RMC.AX) (11.2%), Elixir Energy (EXR.AX) (10.9%), BetaShares Global Uranium ETF (URNM.AX (10.7%), Lotus Resources (LOT.AX) (10.4%), SkyCity Entertainment Group (SKC.AX) (10%)
39 stocks in the big movers list - a bit more like it. Big themes are here - from the top - Uranium (15 stocks), alternate energy (2 stocks), gold/silver mining (5 stocks), rare earths (1 stock), nuclear tech (1 stock)
Week saw US markets focused on yields and the Federal Reserve and Warsh speech at Jackson Hole making for an up and down week. Solid Nvidia (NVDA) earnings did help tech stocks stage a bit of a recovery into the end of the week.
US debt passed $40 trillion in the week. People are starting to sit up and take notice. That phrase "dollar debasement"
Did start some digging last week on how to trade dollar debasement- asked AI for ideas. The standard reply was to be long Swiss Francs. The commodity related answer was Australian Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Brazilian Real. The big movers list from the last few weeks tells you the other way - gold and silver. Did put a chart together of the Swiss Franc and overlaid the Australian Dollar
From the 2025 high vs Swiss Franc has seen a 12.2% decline in dollar value. The decline vs Australian Dollar is 16.3% - seems that investors based in Australia are somewhat hedged provided one has enough cash and stock denominated in AUD.
Canadian Dollar has only seen a 3.6% strengthening and gold price has risen 73% but still 27 points below the pre-war highs.
A lot of this week's investing action was influenced by that - ASX and Canadian gold and silver and copper stocks. Hedging the US Dollar by leaning away from holding US assets. Also took a lot of steps to put in place more open-ended gold and silver options trades.
Crypto Consolidates
Bitcoin price consolidated between the next levels up after the big run finishing the week 0.8% higher than the open with a trough to peak range of 6.2%.
Ethereum price did the same and then ran out of steam finishing the week 1.1% lower than the open with a peak to trough range of 7%.
Most altcoins gave away at least half the gains from the prior week However, Uniswap (UNIBTC) continued the momentum for the week before with a 70% pop coming into the new week
Nuclear Energy Holdings
One sale and a few additions in US and on ASX and a 1.25% increase in valuations.
Mix of holdings sees Paladin Energy (PDN.AX) rise three places to slot 7. NuScale Power Corporation (SMR) drops two places to slot 8 and slots in below enCore Energy Corp (EU). Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM) comes into Top 10 in slot 9 and Lightbridge Corporation (LTBR) drops out the Top 10. Share of portfolios rises 0.4 points to 28.8%
Holdings by stage sees two largish changes with Explorers going up 0.6 points and Technology dropping 1.1 points
Alternate Energy Holdings
One addition in lithium/recycling - categorized as lithium. Surprising 4.4% drop in valuations. Opening balance reduced to reflect the removal of Mineral Resources (MIN.AX) - long time ago sold.
Mix of holdings sees PLS Group (PLS.AX) rise one place into slot 8. Top holding ChargePoint Holdings (CHPT) comes down 1.2 points to 18.6% and L'Air Liquide S.A. (AI.PA) goes up a whole point. Share of portfolios drops 0.4 points to 7.0%
Precious Metals Holdings
Started loading up on smaller names in gold and silver and replaced a few stocks assigned last week. Valuations improve 2% - opening balance changed to reflect the addition of MGX Resources (MGX.AX) - more of a gold business now than an iron ore business.
Mix of holdings sees Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM) come into Top 10 in slot 7 on the addition there. First Majestic Silver (AG) drops two places to slot 10 and Hercules Metals (BIG.V) drops out the Top 10. Number of Others goes up 8 with the additions across the board. Bought
Denison Mines Corp (DNN): Uranium. Added a parcel to small managed portfolio after assignment in Uranium Royalty Corp (UROY) - not enough cash in this account to replace like with like. Wrote covered call for 2.2% premium with 11.2% price coverage.
Glencore plc (GLEN.L): Base Metals. Replaced holdings in managed portfolio and personal portfolio - covered the 5 shares short in each - with a few errors along the way. Multiplier is still 1005 - landed up with 1000 in managed portfolio - added another small parcel - now have 1020 shares. Wrote covered call for 1.4% premium with 4.7% price coverage. Worst error was selling 1010 shares in personal portfolio instead of buying - recovered that next day at a 1.9% blended profit. Wrote covered call for 1.4% premium with 4.5% price coverage.
Sprott Uranium Miners ETF (URNM): Uranium. Started the rebuild of uranium holdings in managed portfolio the lazy way - 100 shares of the ETF
Energy Fuels (UUUU): Uranium. With price opening at $15.00 (Aug 25) put in place an April 2027 expiry 16/22/14 call spread risk reversal in managed portfolio. This offers maximum profit potential of 251% for 47.8% price move. The sold put (14) fully funds the call spread premium with 5.9% price coverage
Crowded chart with new trade shown by the blue arrow markers - just looking for price to get two thirds of the way to recent highs. Sold puts are a bit in no mans land.
