Greetings to everyone, friends of the #EmpowerTalent community. With the topic you bring us each week – especially our dear @angelica7 – inviting us to write about: “Final reflection: The Four Agreements”, an exercise in thinking about what prevents us from agreeing to do things we know will benefit us, and reflecting on those things we already do that have brought us wonderful results. Here is my contribution:

I think it’s normal – as I’ve experienced, just like so many others – to feel a whirlwind of emotions when dealing with daily worries or stress, or when feeling sad or angry. These are changes or decisions we face in certain circumstances, and I must take action when tiredness or doubt threaten to hold me back, so that I can set an example through my work, support my loved ones, and honestly build the steps that lead me to keep creating new things in my life.

A practice for living in peace and leading a better life

So, bearing in mind each of the insights offered by the book The Four Agreements as a way of practising living in peace, I would like to share with you what I have learnt from each of them.

The first commitment is to be responsible for my words, for with the creative power of words – and if I act with honesty – my words cease to be mere automatic reactions and become conscious tools for empathy, motivation and growth, both for myself and for those around me.

When I am able to tend to my thoughts, as if they were my own inner garden, this is the only essential requirement for the flowers of my words and actions to nourish the lives of others as well.

A way to free myself from burdens

As a way of freeing myself from this burden, the second agreement would be: not to take anything personally, especially as what others do or say says more about them than it does about me.

If I allow my mind to feed on critical thoughts, in all areas of my life – whether at work, or even believing that I am rewarded for analysing, comparing, criticising and being negative, including within my family – the truth is that it is important for me to see what is wrong in that situation and what needs to be changed.

In this way, I can understand that criticism from others (and often my own automatic self-criticism) stems from a shortcoming on the part of the other person; therefore, I must not take anything personally. I must deflate the significance of the criticism, as I no longer take the comment as an absolute truth about my own worth, but rather as a reflection of the emotional state and limitations of the person making it.

You need to ask before you imagine

The third agreement is that I do not make assumptions, and I believe it is necessary to ask before imagining; having clarity about things helps me enormously to avoid misunderstandings.

In fact, the best course of action would be to speak to the person who has given me cause to reflect on their actions that have affected me; and if I have doubts about a situation based on comments I’ve heard, the healthiest thing to do is to ask – provided there is sufficient trust – to clarify matters and avoid misunderstandings; this will undoubtedly bring me peace and tranquillity.

In particular, realising that I might make mistakes – such as making assumptions that lead me to speak ill of someone – requires just as much effort as speaking well of them; so, in my view, if I am not going to say anything constructive, I prefer to remain silent.

Demonstrate my skills and abilities

And when I come to the fourth agreement – I always do my very best – I believe that whilst my best effort changes from day to day, and although there are times when I don’t have as much energy, it’s enough if I give it my all.

Striving to do my best without anxiety or too much effort gives me the feeling of a good, relaxed way of life, because every moment of my life is worth making the most of; I must cherish and love these present moments so that I can live them to the full.

It is up to me to decide what value I place on things and where I invest my own time. If I use that time to grow spiritually, to become a better person, to smooth out the rough edges of my character and temperament – which have even led me, unwittingly, to hurt those around me – then that time will be rich, full of peace and joy.

Knowing that I have the capacity to give, when I set my mind to something until I achieve it, especially when I am responsible for my household, where often what I desire is both a necessity and an obligation as a human being – to demonstrate my capabilities and skills, both in my professional and personal development and for the benefit of my loved ones.

In any case, if I may, I won’t ask for anything more; I’ll simply resolve to work with the resources I already have to contribute to the task that falls to me. So, what I can offer is myself, my knowledge and my creativity, because I know that if I do my very best, I’m sure I’ll do it well.
