Preventive Healthcare: Taking Care of the Body Before It Breaks Down

The human body is like an engine that might develop a fault while still functioning, unknown to the operator, and with time, finally breaks down. Preventive healthcare helps us understand that the body does not necessarily have to break down before we pay attention to it. Simple, healthy habits can also be a form of preventive healthcare. Preventive healthcare does not end with regular body check-ups. it also includes examining our lifestyle to determine whether it is promoting optimal wellbeing or not.

Before I chose to study Human Nutrition and Dietetics, I did not really pay attention to some of the simple things we often consider normal. For instance, I could stay for hours without drinking water and would only drink water when I became thirsty. But now I know better, that staying adequately and regularly hydrated is a simple habit with many health benefits. Our bodies need water to function properly. The kidneys need adequate water to perform their functions, because we also lose water through urine, sweating, and other processes and these fluids lost should be replaced. When our water intake is consistently low, it can affect normal body functions and may increase the risk of certain health problems.

Another important area is our feeding habits. Some people believe they are eating well simply because they eat until they are satisfied. However, good nutrition is more than just eating enough food, it is also about the quality and variety of what we consume. Reducing our intake of highly processed foods, including vegetables in our meals, and eating fruits and foods that are available locally can help support the proper functioning of the body. There is a popular saying that, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” it reminds us that our everyday food choices can contribute to our overall health.

Maintaining good health is not entirely the responsibility of healthcare professionals. We also have a role to play by adopting lifestyles that promote health. We can reduce excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks, choose more natural and minimally processed foods, avoid making late-night eating a regular habit, and engage in physical activity from time to time.

Another important preventive habit is getting adequate rest. In today's world, where many people spend long hours on their phones and other screens, limiting screen time, especially before bedtime, can help promote better sleep. Rest is therapeutic to the body. it gives the body an opportunity to recover from the strains of the day. Getting enough sleep helps us function better and supports our overall well-being.

All these habits serve as a foundation for healthy living. Regular health check-ups then complement these habits by helping us identify potential health problems early, even when we feel perfectly fine.

So I will say preventive healthcare, is not simply about waiting for the doctor to tell us that something is wrong. It is about taking responsibility for our health every day. The choices we make about what we eat, what we drink, how much we sleep, how active we are, and how often we monitor our health can all contribute to preventing problems before they become serious.
