Este mundial ha tenido muchas sorpresas, con equipos como Cabo Verde avanzado de fase de grupos, con duelos mas igualados de lo que cualquiera hubiera esperado o con eliminaciones muy tempranas de varios equipos que eran candidatos, pero creo que la decepción mas grande ha sido el nivel de las selecciones sudamericanas, que llegando ya a los cuartos de final, solo queda una en pie.

Como no podía ser de otra forma, la única en mantenerse en pie es la Argentina de Leo Messi, que se jugará su paso a la semifinal contra Suiza, luego de haber tenido una fase de grupos relativamente sencilla, donde el único que presentó cierta resistencia fue Austria, logrando ser los líderes con puntuación perfecta. En estos dos partidos de zona de eliminación directa, la albiceste ha tenido que luchar para eliminar a Cabo Verde y Egipto, dos rivales teóricamente muy inferiores.

El otro que también generó muchas sensaciones buenas previo al mundial fue Paraguay, que volvía a la cita tras 16 años de ausencia, y aunque tuvo un inicio complicado con una goleada en su debut frente a Estados Unidos, logró meterse en la siguiente fase. Allí dió una de las campanadas al eliminar a Alemania en los penales, y contra Francia, armó un sistema defensivo casi infranqueable, que solo cayó ante un penal en los minutos finales de la segunda parte.

Aunque no estuvieron sus estandartes de la última década, Luis Suarez y Edison Cavani, aún tenían a jugadores importantes como el Pajarito Valverde o Rodrigo Betancourt, por lo que es inconcebible quedar eliminado en un grupo con Arabia Saudita o Cabo Verde, donde además pueden avanzar los mejores terceros.

Personalmente, pienso que lo de Ecuador fue lo peor del continente, pues llegaban con su generación de oro, y ya desde el primer partido, dejaron mucho que desear, perdiendo con Costa de Marfil y no pudiendo pasar del empate ante Curazao. La victoria ante Alemania fue un espejismo, pues los teutones también fueron una desilusión, y cuando llegó el juego definitivo, México les metió un baile, con un 2 a 0 que quedó corto, dada las circunstancias.

Ya por último, lo de Brasil no vale la pena ni mencionarlo, pues la verdeamarella esta sumergida en una crisis de identidad, hace años que ya no son la potencia futbolisca de antaño, y aunque no tienen malos jugadores, es claro que la época de Ronaldo Nazario, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo y compañía esta muy lejos de la versión actual. Su mayor esperanza estaba en el último gran crack brasileño, Neymar, pero nunca llegó a estar al 100%, y aunque Vinicius se cargó el equipo al hombro en grandes tramos del torneo, no es suficiente para devolverle la grandeza a su país.
