Deadline Day Chaos: Aston Villa's $100m Spree and the Fofana Hijack Drama

Deadline day has delivered exactly the mayhem it always promises, with Aston Villa going on a spending spree worth over $100 million in a single day, while a separate transfer saga involving Lyon winger Malick Fofana has descended into a genuine bidding war between two Premier League clubs.
Villa's rebuild continues at pace
Aston Villa have added two significant new faces as they continue reshaping their squad around a younger core. The club confirmed the signing of centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton for a fee reported at up to $40 million. Harwood-Bellis has emerged as one of the most promising young English defenders in recent seasons, and he arrives as the direct long-term replacement for Ezri Konsa.
Villa didn't stop there. In a club-record move, they've also completed the signing of 18-year-old winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee in excess of $63.6 million. Mbaye is regarded as one of the most exciting young wing talents in the game, but with his path to regular football blocked at PSG, Villa moved decisively to secure his signature. Announcing the deal, the club posted: "The fuse has been lit," signalling their intent to build something exciting around this new young core following a summer of major squad turnover.
Fofana caught in a deadline-day hijack
Elsewhere, one of the most dramatic subplots of the day has been unfolding around Lyon's 21-year-old winger Malick Fofana. According to Fabrizio Romano, Fofana had already completed his medical at Sunderland, appearing to put the finishing touches on a move worth around €30m plus €5m in add-ons. However, in a stunning late twist, Crystal Palace swooped in with a rival bid, attempting to hijack the deal by offering better terms directly to Lyon. As it stands, a final decision on which club lands the winger is still pending, with Romano reporting talks are ongoing as the clock ticks down.
Fofana had initially also been linked with Arsenal earlier in the window as they explored back-up options at left wing, before Sunderland appeared to have won the race — only for Palace's late intervention to throw the outcome back into doubt.
With deals for Enzo Fernández (Chelsea to Man City), Manu Koné (Roma to Chelsea), Jack Grealish (Man City to Everton), and Iliman Ndiaye (Everton to Man City) also still being finalized elsewhere, deadline day is shaping up to be one of the most chaotic in recent memory.
