Pyramids take commanding lead over Gor Mahia in thrilling CAF Champions League clash ⚽🌍

Egyptian giants Pyramids FC recorded a 2-0 away win against Kenyan champions Gor Mahia at Nyayo National Stadium in the preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League – but the story is much richer than the scoreline suggests.
HOW It HAPPENED.
Gor Mahia started well, almost jolting the visitors within the first two minutes when Pyramids goalkeeper gave away possession outside his own box. Ebenezer Assifuah collected the ball from the loose and made a shot for goal but was denied by a heroic clearance off the line in the dying embers of the game.
But Pyramids replied with ruthless efficiency. In the 5th minute, Mostafa Fathi cut loose with a dangerous cross from the wing and Gor’s goalkeeper Byrne Omondi could only parry it into the path of Walid El Karti who buried the rebound and silenced the home crowd.
Visitors doubled their advantage just before the half-time break when Mahmoud Saber netted a spectacular goal from outside the penalty box to give Pyramids a commanding 2-0 cushion at the break.
The Bigger Picture
The form continues a good spell for coach Rulani Mokwena’s Pyramids side, who are now unbeaten and unscored against in four straight games in all competitions. As the current 2024/25 CAF Champions League winners (having beaten Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate in the final), Pyramids look every bit the continental heavyweight they have become.
Gor Mahia missed last season’s African arena and it’s a tough return for them. Coach Charles Akonnor said the difference was a lapse in concentration and losing the control of the midfield in the first half but he saw positives in his side’s improved showing in the second half.
WHAT’S NEXT
The two sides meet again for the second leg on September 13 at Cairo’s Air Defense Stadium. Gor Mahia will need a big response – and at least two goals – to keep their continental dreams alive against one of Africa’s teams in form.
