What Drives Me to Help Others
I was really happy when I saw this week's topic, though it's been a long time since I posted . Let me just start by saying Life is full of surprises. None of us knows what will happen tomorrow. Today, I might be healthy and strong, but tomorrow I could fall sick. Today, I might have a good job, but tomorrow I could lose it. Today, I might be happy, but tomorrow I could face problems. This simple truth is what pushes me to help other people.
When I see someone struggling, I try to imagine myself in their situation. What if that was me? What if I was the one who had no food to eat? What if I was the one who had no one to talk to? What if I was the one feeling hopeless and alone? When I think like this, something changes inside me. The person in front of me is no longer a stranger. They become my reflection. Their pain becomes real to me. I can feel their sadness. I can understand their fear. And suddenly, I cannot just walk away.
Helping others is not about being a hero or showing off. It is about being human. A small act of kindness can mean the world to someone. A warm meal, a kind word, a little money, or simply listening to someone's problems—these things might seem small to us, but they can be huge for the person receiving them. Sometimes, all a person needs is to know that someone cares. That someone sees them. That they are not invisible.
Why is helping good? First, it brings happiness. There is a special joy that comes from putting a smile on someone's face. It feels better than buying something for yourself. It fills your heart in a way that money cannot.
Second, helping makes the world a better place. Think about it. If everyone helped just one person, how many problems would be solved? How many tears would stop? How many lives would change? We cannot fix everything, but we can fix something. And that something matters.
Third, and most importantly, helping is good because one day, we might be the ones in need. Life has a funny way of turning tables. The person we help today might help us tomorrow. The kindness we give comes back to us, not always from the same person, but in some way or another. What goes around comes around.
I have seen how a little help can change lives. I remember a time when I helped an old neighbor carry her groceries. She was so thankful. Her eyes lit up. That small act made her day. I also remember a time when a stranger helped me . I Remember when I was traveling from Abuja to Nasarawa I ran out of transport and I was so stranded and confused I didn't know who to call because my phone was down. Immediately I saw a stranger passing by, so I decided to ask for his help. I was surprised he paid for my transport and also gave me some change to keep.I will never forget that kindness. It stayed with me and made me want to pass it on.
We are all connected. No one is an island. We all need each other. Life is tough enough as it is. There is no need to make it harder for others. By helping, we show that we care. We show that we are not selfish. We show that we understand that tomorrow is not promised.
So, I choose to help. Not because I am special. Not because I have extra time or money. But because I know that I could be in their shoes someday. Because I know that a little kindness goes a long way. Because I believe that every small act of goodness makes this world a little brighter. And in a world full of uncertainty, that is the one thing we can all do be there for each other.
