Ladies of Hive #299 β€”The Three Friends Who Stayed Through Every Storm πŸ’›

They say a true friend is one of the rarest things you'll find in a lifetime. I used to think that was just something people said β€” until I spent years actually looking.

For most of my life, finding a real friend has been a struggle , and a lot of it was circumstance. I left my hometown for college, then moved again from where I'd settled, and later I married and moved once more. Every move pulled me a little further from the people who truly knew me. Distance has a quiet way of testing friendship, and most, I learned, don't survive it.

Here's a thought I keep coming back to (forgive the tech brain): women's minds are like blockchains. Layered, complex, every block unique, and no two ledgers ever quite the same β€” and our emotions run exactly the same way. So finding a friendship that genuinely fits isn't really like meeting someone; it's like finding the one puzzle piece that clicks perfectly into yours. It's rare. And maybe it's supposed to be. ─── πŸ’Ž ───

My twenties were proof of that. Friendships back then were as chaotic as the decade itself β€” some real, some that ended in disappointment, and a few that quietly taught me who not to trust. Still, those years gave me good people too, from university and from work.

My thirties, though, have been beautiful for friendship. I think it's because we finally grow into ourselves. We respect boundaries, we understand what we're offering and what we're asking for, and both sides show up with honest expectations.

Because real friendship , I've come to believe, comes with rules. You have to tolerate each other's madness. You have to feel the other person, not just hear her. You have to show love, show respect, and β€” especially between women, since we feel everything so deeply β€” you have to show up and stand beside her the moment trouble appears. It takes real effort. But once you've found it, you get something priceless back: a mind at rest, a back that's always covered, and someone to run to when no one else is there.

So how many have I found? Three. I'm thirty, and I have exactly three friends who have truly stayed. One I earned at three years old, and she's still here. One from college. And one who arrived after marriage. Apparently it takes me a whole decade to collect each one. πŸ˜„ I've made plenty of other friends along the way, but these three are different β€” less like friends and more like my shadows: always there, quietly following wherever life takes me.

They show up when I need them, without ever being asked. I'll never forget the night my tire blew out in the middle of a terrible storm, three grumpy kids strapped in the back β€” one of them came out into that downpour and changed it herself, soaked to the bone and completely unbothered, handling the "tough," "men's work" like it was nothing. Turns out she's every bit as stubborn as I am. When my mom fell ill, another quietly took so many of the chores off my hands that I could finally breathe β€” she didn't wait to be asked, she just appeared and carried what I couldn't. And the third still sends me job offers whenever she spots one, simply because she knows I work from home and wants something better for me. There are countless moments like these β€” far more than I could ever list, or ever repay. ─── πŸ’Ž ───

And through all of it, they'd still split their last few cents with me, share their food, and go a little crazy with me the way we did as kids, ringing a doorbell and sprinting off before anyone could answer.

That, to me, is what "having your back" really means. Not grand gestures β€” just presence. And knowing they're out there, three unshakable blocks in my chaotic little ledger, is the most restful feeling I know.
