Money Doesn't Change You—It Just Gives You Permission to Be Yourself

I've seen a lot of people change when they become rich, and I've seen people become humble in poverty, all influenced by their change of state. A lot of things happen mentally when one is either rich or poor. For the rich, they try to fulfill a desire that has been longing in their heart at a time when they had nothing. Most times you'll hear people tell you things like "when I become rich, I'll do this and that" and they actually do it when they become rich, then eventually they're influenced by their status to do whatever their heart desires.

When someone becomes wealthy, his mentality changes because he's aware of what his money can afford. He automatically knows the value of what he's got and suddenly develops any state of mind based on his knowledge and wisdom. Likewise, when one becomes poor, the guilt of his recklessness or the shame of his low state hits him and suddenly he becomes humble. There's always a mental state that brings about the shift in one's behavior. The realization awakens a knowledge in us that either builds us or mars us, and at this state, people start to say he has been changed by his wealth, or money only awakened a part of him that was dormant for years waiting for such an opportunity.

In my opinion, money doesn't changes anyone. We may suddenly become either busy, calculative, generous, reserved, proud, arrogant, happy, or sad. Its more like a part of us that was held back; it's just us expressing the awareness of what we have. What differs is our wisdom in managing that information. Some who are knowledgeable may not express negative attributes, but some people may, and this is in the process of trying to protect what they have or misrepresenting the information their heart has harbored.

There's nothing wrong with money, but it has the power to influence. A rich man knows he's rich and he knows what money can do. He can decide to use this information in whatever way he desires. We can relate this to someone who suddenly knows he's an heir to a multimillion fortune. He walks knowing he's worth a fortune and may suddenly start thinking differently. These thoughts weren't in him before the realization, but suddenly came when he did. This is exactly what money does to us: it gives us a realization, and we are left to do whatever we want with it. Unfortunately, most people choose pride.
