«I was supposed to feel like an adult by now… and I’m only just beginning to understand it»
First, I have to confess something: I’ve been a bit out of the loop, and the reason is precisely this transition into adulthood. I found my first job, I’m taking a certificate program, plus an English course, my family came to visit me… and between one thing and another, I haven’t been able to be as active on Hive. I’ve barely had time to sit down and reflect on life, because I’m just finishing one responsibility and already moving on to the next. And maybe that’s also part of growing up: feeling that time doesn’t move the same way anymore.
When I was younger, I thought that by a certain age, everything would be clear to me. I believed that by the time I was 23 or 25, I would feel like a fully-fledged adult: confident, stable, organized, with answers for almost everything. But biologically speaking, my frontal lobe hadn't even finished maturing at that point. Now, just a few weeks before turning 27, I’m only just beginning to feel a little bit like an adult… and the funny thing is, I feel like I have more questions than answers.

ÂżEstabilidad? ÂżOrganizaciĂłn? ÂżSeguridad? No, todavĂa no estoy ahĂ.
Stability? Organization? Security? No, I’m not there yet. I barely feel like I’m taking my first steps. And when we live in a society that puts so much pressure on the idea of “having your life figured out” by a certain age, it’s very easy to feel like you’re falling behind. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others, especially people we only see on social media. People our own age—or even younger—living lives that seem perfectly adult, while I’m genuinely happy just waiting for Sunday to watch a new episode of One Piece.
Ten years ago, I imagined that this version of myself would be a completely stable, empowered, independent woman… that ideal image they often sell us. But the reality is different. I just graduated a few months ago, I’m just entering the workforce, and, honestly, I haven’t got a clue. I’m taking each day as it comes, trying to do the best I can. Yes, I have goals, plans, and dreams, and I’m making decisions to get closer to them, but I don’t have all the answers. In fact, I often feel like I don’t know anything.

Me gusta sentirme productiva.
Sometimes growing up feels less like “having it all figured out” and more like learning to live all over again. The person I am today bears no resemblance to who I used to be. Every step I take feels like learning to walk all over again, every decision like learning a new language. I thought that at this age I’d feel more confident, and the truth is that I’m really afraid of life right now. But there’s also something incredible about that: I like it. I like feeling productive. I like feeling that I’m finally moving forward, that I’m getting out of an emotional pool where I’d been drowning for a while.
We’re all bombarded with so many ideas about growing up: the dream job, owning a home, a stable relationship, total financial independence. And when you don’t fit that mold, it’s easy to feel guilty. To feel like you’re failing. I’ve asked myself: Why am I turning 27 and still want to be given books or a shirt featuring my favorite anime character? Why aren’t my interests more “adult”? But then I ask myself something more important: What does it really mean to be an adult?

Does it mean giving up certain pleasures? Does it mean becoming serious, distant, or constantly stressed? Or maybe being an adult is simply having the freedom to make decisions based on your interests, your well-being, and your peace of mind? Because if that’s the case, then yes, I am starting to feel like an adult. I work, study, exercise, run errands on my own, and slowly build my own path… and I also come home happy to take a shower, eat cereal with milk, and watch anime.
Perhaps part of the reason I don’t feel like an adult stems from my surroundings, and part of it comes from within me. From the pressure of believing that adulthood has to look a certain way—that it has to feel exhausting, solemn, and perfectly structured. And since I don’t dream of that version of life, I sometimes think I’m doing something wrong. But I don’t think enjoying a fantasy show makes me any less of an adult. I think it simply makes me a happier person.

Since I found a job, I’ve started to feel like an adult in a way I didn’t expect: not just because Im working, but because of the freedom it’s given me. The freedom to do things I enjoy, to go out on my own, to interact with others, to express my opinions, to put my knowledge into practice, and to feel useful. Yes, I’ve also been very tired, but I feel like I’m moving forward. And that’s worth a lot.
I think I started to feel like an adult when I stopped following pre-determined paths and had to carve out my own. During my teenage years and college, there were clear structures: study, pass, move on. Not anymore. Now it’s up to me to get organized, set goals, make decisions, and face the consequences
Fear, which is now a constant emotion for me, has ended up becoming part of the process. I’ve felt fear at work, in my classes, when talking to new people, and when thinking about practicing professionally. But I’ve come to understand that fear doesn’t always come to hold us back; often it comes to let us know that we’re facing something new and that it’s time to grow. And facing those fears, no matter how small they may seem, has made me proud of myself.

Y con mi energĂa me he vuelto selectiva.
Adulthood didn’t arrive when I graduated, nor because the calendar marked a certain age. It came quietly, through accumulated experiences and the way I’ve learned to navigate them. It arrived when I began to value my time, my money, and my energy differently. Before, much of my life revolved around myself, with more free time and fewer responsibilities. Now I organize my days according to real priorities, manage my own money, think about saving, helping others, and building something stable. And I’ve become selective with my energy. I no longer feel guilty for wanting to rest, for not replying to messages right away, or for choosing a quiet night to myself. I realized that taking care of myself is also part of growing up.

Even so, growing up doesn't always feel exciting. Sometimes it feels strange, slow, or confusing. There are days when I still feel like a teenager, and others when part of me is still a little girl. Sometimes I just want to hide under my covers, read, and disappear into my inner world for a while. But reality always knocks on the door, and instead of living my life trying to escape it, I’m learning to build a life I don’t want to run away from.
I’m about to turn 27, and only now do I feel like I’m truly entering that stage called adulthood. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that you’re never too late to start your own life , so don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. In your life, you’re the one who sets the rules, the goals, and the boundaries, and for better or worse, the course depends on your decisions. Maturing shouldn’t mean abandoning our essence, but rather learning to carry it with us into new stages.
