Dan Brown is, without a doubt, one of my favorite authors✨ I have all his books in print, and once again, The Secret of Secrets managed to captivate me with that formula I enjoy so much: Robert Langdon, a European city, a secret capable of shaking the world, and, of course, a good conspiracy theory. However, this time the book particularly caught my attention from a psychological perspective, because it delves into one of the great mysteries of our own minds: consciousness. That’s why, rather than simply telling you whether I liked it or not, I wanted to focus on the science, the major theories, and the discoveries that Dan Brown uses to build this story; because even though his novels are labeled as science fiction , many of the elements he presents actually exist, and they’re precisely what make his conspiracies so unsettlingly believable. Because if there’s one thing I love about this author, it’s how he makes me question where fiction ends and reality begins.

Dan Brown es, sin duda, uno de mis autores favoritos✨ Tengo todos sus libros en físico y, una vez más, El Último Secreto consiguió atraparme con esa fórmula que tanto disfruto: Robert Langdon, una ciudad europea, un secreto capaz de sacudir al mundo y, por supuesto, una buena teoría conspirativa. Sin embargo, esta vez el libro me llamó especialmente la atención desde la Psicología, porque se adentra en uno de los grandes misterios de nuestra propia mente: la conciencia. Por eso, más que limitarme a contarles si me gustó o no, quería detenerme en la ciencia, las grandes teorías y los descubrimientos que Dan Brown utiliza para construir esta historia; porque aunque sus novelas estén etiquetadas como ciencia ficción , muchos de los elementos que presenta existen realmente y son precisamente los que hacen que sus conspiraciones resulten tan inquietantemente creíbles. Porque si algo me encanta de este autor es hacerme dudar de dónde termina la ficción y dónde comienza la realidad.

There's something very unique about the way Dan Brown constructs his stories, and even after so many books, it still fascinates me: the feeling that I'm reading fiction, but that I could just as easily be reading something that someone doesn't want us to know.
I love that his books include a note clarifying that many of the facts, places, organizations, and investigations mentioned are real. And I think that’s exactly what makes the experience so immersive. Brown takes information that exists in our world and pushes it to the limits of fiction, so that you end up wondering how much of what you’ve just read might actually be true.
It's like willingly becoming part of a conspiracy. For a few hours, you feel like you're uncovering an important secret—something that most people may not know. And even though you know you're reading a novel, Brown manages to blur the line between reality and fiction quite a bit.

Hay algo muy particular en la forma en que Dan Brown construye sus historias y que, después de tantos libros, sigue fascinándome: la sensación de que estoy leyendo ficción, pero que perfectamente podría estar leyendo algo que alguien no quiere que sepamos.
Me encanta que sus libros incluyan una nota aclarando que muchos de los datos, lugares, organizaciones e investigaciones mencionados son reales. Y creo que precisamente eso hace que la inmersión sea tan diferente. Brown toma información que existe en nuestro mundo y la lleva hasta los límites de la ficción, de modo que terminas preguntándote cuánto de lo que acabas de leer podría ser cierto.

That’s why, for me, Dan Brown’s books aren’t the kind of reads you can rush through. I need to have the internet handy. 😂 If he mentions a painting, I want to look it up. If he talks about a book, I want to find out what it’s about. If a city comes up, I want to see photos and maps. And if he introduces a scientific concept I’m not familiar with, I need to know what it means.
Brown writes almost like Robert Langdon: like a professor.
In The Secret of Secrets , for example, we’re introduced to noetic science through Katherine Solomon —a discipline I didn’t even know existed before I started the book. It seeks to study consciousness and the relationship between internal experience and external reality, although many of its claims are considered pseudoscientific by the scientific community due to a lack of sufficient empirical evidence.
Por eso, para mí, los libros de Dan Brown no son lecturas para hacer demasiado rápido. Necesito internet a la mano. 😂 Si menciona una pintura, quiero buscarla. Si habla de un libro, quiero investigar de qué trata. Si aparece una ciudad, quiero ver fotografías y mapas. Y si introduce un concepto científico que no conozco, necesito saber qué significa.

Katherine argues that many phenomena of consciousness that we currently classify as paranormal—such as extrasensory perception, precognition, telepathy, or certain out-of-body experiences—may not necessarily be “supernatural,” but simply phenomena that we do not yet understand.
I have to admit something here: I totally buy into these kinds of theories in Dan Brown’s novels😂 Not because I’m going to finish reading them believing that everything he proposes is scientifically true, but because he manages to present a hypothesis that’s interesting enough to make you want to investigate it on your own.

The brain as a radio
One of the ideas that fascinated me the most was the theory of non-local consciousness.
According to Katherine’s hypothesis, consciousness is not confined exclusively to our brains. Rather, the brain functions as a receiver: a kind of radio capable of connecting to a much broader and more universal consciousness , but one that uses certain filters to prevent us from receiving all that information at once.
The book mentions that our brain is like a phone connected to a massive cloud of information; the information is there, but our device can only access a portion of it. And this is where things start to get dangerously interesting. Because if our perception of reality is limited by our brain’s filters, what would happen if we could reduce those filters? What would we be able to perceive? What would we be capable of?

Una de las ideas que más me fascinó fue la teoría de la conciencia no local.
Según la hipótesis que plantea Katherine, la conciencia no estaría contenida exclusivamente dentro de nuestro cerebro. El cerebro funcionaría más bien como un receptor: una especie de radio capaz de conectarse con una conciencia mucho más amplia y universal , pero que utiliza determinados filtros para evitar que recibamos toda esa información al mismo tiempo.
El libro menciona que nuestro cerebro es un teléfono conectado a una enorme nube de información; la información está ahí, pero nuestro dispositivo solo puede acceder a una parte de ella. Y aquí todo empieza a ponerse peligrosamente interesante. Porque si nuestra percepción de la realidad está limitada por los filtros de nuestro cerebro, ¿qué pasaría si pudiéramos reducir esos filtros? ¿Qué podríamos percibir? ¿De qué seríamos capaces?

The explanation offered in the book even extends to GABA , an inhibitory neurotransmitter involved in regulating brain activity. According to Katherine’s theory, this inhibitory system functions as one of the filters that prevent our brain from accessing this supposed universal consciousness.
The book also links this idea to epilepsy. It suggests that, during certain moments following a seizure, when the brain is regaining its balance, people may experience a postictal state , which the book associates with experiences of peace, creativity, empathy, or spiritual enlightenment, since that “brain filter” has disappeared. I understood it as if there were a reset in the brain.
The book even made me consider another possibility: What if some experiences that we have historically interpreted as spiritual enlightenment, extraordinary intuitions, or even miracles were, in reality, manifestations of human abilities that we do not yet understand?

La explicación que ofrece el libro incluso llega hasta el GABA , un neurotransmisor inhibidor que participa en la regulación de la actividad cerebral.
