It's amazing that, even though I can't swim, I love the beach so much🌴 It's also funny that this was my first trip to the ocean so far this year. That's why I was especially excited that it wasn't just a day at the beach, but a little tour to get to know one of Venezuela's many beautiful spots better.

There’s something I really enjoy about traveling within my own country: discovering that there are still places, stories, and little details left to explore. Every time I learn something new about Venezuela, I feel the same excitement as a little girl exploring the world for the first time💗

My tour of Morrocoy National Park began in Chichiriviche, one of the main gateways to this natural paradise in Falcón State. Interestingly, it’s one of the coastal areas in the country that I’ve visited most often throughout my life. I’ve spent time on these beaches since I was a child, although I hadn’t been back in recent years. And this time, I explored much more of it.

I took this tour with TravelBqto as part of my mom’s birthday celebration. If there’s one thing that defines me, it’s that I’m up for any adventure. It doesn’t matter if it’s a mountain, a beach, a cave, or a hike. I’ve even gone scuba diving without knowing how to swim just to see shipwrecks. That’s why my favorite trips are the ones that include tours, multiple stops, and the chance to learn about the history and culture of each place.

When we arrived at the pier, I was still freezing from the air conditioning on the bus. And it was impossible not to notice how many people were there. It was Sunday, and the place was completely packed. Seriously, so many people.

However, one of the advantages of traveling with a tour agency is that they handle all the logistics. While other visitors were standing in line and making arrangements for their trip, our group already had the boats ready and waiting for us. We arrived, got organized, and started the adventure almost right away.

Our first stop was at the border between Morrocoy National Park and the Cuare Wildlife Refuge. There, the boatman took the opportunity to tell us a little about the history of the place, the indigenous peoples who once inhabited the area, and the flora and fauna that are now part of this protected ecosystem. He also explained that many years ago there was a cement factory near the refuge, whose operations had a negative impact on the natural environment. Fortunately, the plant closed, and today much of this area is protected, with sections where public access is restricted to preserve nature.

Of all the stories we heard, there was one that particularly surprised me. Ever since I was a child, I had believed that the famous Cayo Muerto got its name from the calmness of its waters, but it turns out that its origin is much more interesting. According to what we were told, the original name was “Cayo del Muerto” and is believed to be related to ancient indigenous burials that took place there during the Spanish conquest. Over time, the name was simplified until it became the current Cayo Muerto.

The second stop was a shipwreck that has lain in these waters for many years. Interestingly, this is only the second shipwreck I’ve ever visited, and I think I can admit that I feel a certain fascination with these places. They always seem to be shrouded in stories, mysteries, and unanswered questions.

Unlike another shipwreck I had visited previously, snorkeling or diving isn’t allowed here. The ship is located within the protected refuge, and it’s also common for small caimans to rest on the parts of the structure that still protrude from the water. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any during our visit, though I confess I would have liked to.

Even so, sailing so close to it was impressive. There are hardly any remains visible on the surface, but much of the vessel remains underwater; it used to make trips between Morrocoy and the nearby islands. We were told that it even carried contraband goods at one point, so we could jokingly say that we visited a little pirate ship.

Our next stop was the Tunnel of Love , a narrow channel surrounded by mangroves whose branches meet over the water, forming a sort of natural canopy. The place gets its name because it’s usually very quiet and secluded. Since it’s located within the nature reserve, boat traffic is limited, so a calmness reigns here that’s hard to find in other, more touristy spots.

And the truth is, the name suits it well. Between the sound of the water, the birdsong, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature, the place exudes a very special sense of peace. For a moment, I felt as though I were hidden from the rest of the world, in a small, secret corner of Morrocoy.

The stop I was most looking forward to was the Cuevas de los Indios , and it ended up becoming my favorite part of the tour.

When we think of a trip to the beach, we usually picture sand, sea, and sun—not caves hidden among rock formations—which is why this place felt so special to me. Centuries ago, it was used as a refuge by indigenous communities, and it still preserves some petroglyphs carved into the rock—symbols related to their beliefs. It was the first time I’d seen petroglyphs in person, and as a history lover, I was thrilled to be able to observe them up close.

Beyond its historical significance, the place has an atmosphere that’s hard to describe. As you make your way through the enormous rocks, the sound of the sea fades away, replaced by birdsong and the wind rustling through the vegetation. At times, I felt as though I had stepped into a space suspended in time, cut off from the rest of the world.

The tour ends by traversing a narrower, darker path between the rocks, where you have to walk carefully... especially because of the enormous crabs that inhabit the area. It was an experience as curious as it was fascinating, and without a doubt the part of the tour I enjoyed the most.
