Armed with a jacket and an enthusiastic labrador, we took to the fields today for a proper local walk.

Our walk took us through very colourful woodland (thanks to the overnight rain) and out across fields that looked quintessentially English, I thought this morning.

Along the way, we spotted some spiky sweet chestnut cases resting on a stone wall. Looking closer, I noticed tiny ladybirds tucked among the prickles, which was a nice surprise.

We emerged from the woods onto a footpath, where the landscape opened up to reveal views of green fields and hills. Traditional drystone walls stretched alongside our route. Right on cue, the skies darkened slightly and treated us to a brief rain shower. The wind picked up too. It was alright for the pooch, who was sheltered being lower to the ground! We carried on along the trail. Luckily, the rain blew over quickly before we could get properly soaked. If anything, the drizzle only made the colours of the landscape look even greener.

Lower down, there is a farmhouse with grazing cattle, looking like something straight off a postcard. You really couldn't ask for a more classic English scene.

After the fields, we entered Britton Wood.

The trails were lined with green ferns slowly turning to warm rusts. The pooch was in his element, trotting along the paths inspecting everything in sight.

We then did a circular walk in the wood before making our way back up to the fields and through the first woods again. Unfortunately, it was uphill most of the way back. It was a simple morning walk, just me and the pooch, a scenic trail, and a little bit of unpredictable British weather.
