John 13:34 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Love among the brethren is the defining symbol of true Christianity. In the above passage Jesus did not simply command us to love others as we love ourselves; He placed upon us a higher demand, to love one another just as He loved us. Christ called this a “New commandment.”

It was not new in the sense that love had never been instructed before but new because it was now established as the distinctive mark by which His followers would be known. In the past days, outward signs and marks were common identifiers. The Jew was recognized by his distinct apparel and religious rites; the philosopher by his robe or symbol; the soldier by his uniform. But not a single of these groups were ever identified by love as their badge of belonging.

Christ changed that. He declared that His disciples would be identified, not by wealth, education, fame, clothing, or religious symbols but by their genuine, sacrificial love for one another. This emblem of love supersedes all barriers, nationality, race, class, rank, denomination or social status.
