A moment of relaxation, a moment of calm – August’s theme

This is my contribution to this community’s theme of the month: A moment of relaxation, a moment of calm – August’s theme

I’d like to give a special shout-out to @avdesing for the suggestion, and to all my friends in this wonderful community. I’d also like to invite @vezo and @sacra97 to join this initiative.

For many years, I’ve used music with specific Solfeggio frequencies to relax or meditate (to be honest, I’m not really sure what that means). Specifically, the 432 Hz and 528 Hz frequencies are said to be helpful for combating anxiety.

I’ve also turned to music featuring Delta or Theta waves, though today I’m going to highlight channels that include binaural music in their playlists.

Although this music is sometimes presented as EMDR, as I will explain later, bilateral music is not EMDR.

Regarding EMDR, it can be said that, as a form of psychotherapy, it has a vast amount of [empirical evidence](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/understandtx/emdr.asp) regarding its effectiveness in cases of trauma.

EMDR sessions initially focused solely on eye movements, over time the technique incorporated skin stimulation and auditory stimulation.

Thanks to this integration of sound into the framework of EMDR sessions, bilateral music is now also referred to as EMDR.

The theory holds that this type of music, by alternating sounds between the left and right ears and vice versa, intermittently stimulates each hemisphere of the brain. This helps balance brain activity. This balance is associated with states of calm and tranquility.

I’m not sure if this is the mechanism that explains the effectiveness of these recordings, but based on my practice, what I can assure you is that they can be very useful for calming the mind and body.

Sound Energy Alchemist

According to the information on YouTube, the creator behind this channel is a therapist, musician, and the composer of the channel’s tracks.

The first thing I want to emphasize is that for these videos to be effective, you need to listen to them with headphones. This is essential if we want the bilateral brain stimulation to work.

Sound Energy Alchemist is a great YouTube channel with 274,000 well-deserved subscribers.

Not all the videos are “EMDR”; within the [playlists]([Playlists](https://www.youtube.com/@SoundEnergyAlchemist/playlists)) section, there’s a whole repertoire of alternatives for relaxation.

The channel’s only problem—and this isn’t unique to it—is the misinformation it spreads about EMDR therapy.

The video descriptions state that:

>Bilateral music helps the brain process stress or traumatic memories, allowing the person to reflect on them without experiencing intense anxiety or stress. Bilateral music calms, relaxes, and soothes the mind, body, and spirit.

Several objections must be raised here.

EMDR treatment consists of 8 phases, only one of which is bilateral stimulation (eyes, ears, or skin).
