¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me paso por acá para traerles mi reseña acerca de un libro sobre relatos tecnológicos perturbadores ideal para los tiempos hiperconectados que vivimos. Les estoy hablando de Kentukis de la autora Samanta Schweblin.

En este libro nos encontramos con relatos que tienen como protagonistas a unos muñecos llamados Kentukis que vienen en forma de animales y los puedes tener corriendo por tu casa como si fueran mascotas virtuales. La novedad es que esos muñecos no son robots, están manejados por otros humanos que se conectan desde diferentes paĂses del mundo. AsĂ "amo" y "ser" queden conectados entre sĂ, ambos son conscientes de lo que implica esta conexiĂłn, pero eso no impide tener a desconocidos espiando la intimidad de tu hogar porque les dan libre acceso. Es una novela que habla acerca de los peligros de la hiperconectividad y lo vulnerable que nos podemos volver a raĂz de ello con las nuevas tecnologĂas.
>In this book, we encounter stories featuring toys called Kentukis that take the form of animals and can be made to run around your house as if they were virtual pets. The twist is that these toys aren’t robots; they’re controlled by other humans who log in from different countries around the world. So while the “owner” and the “toy” remain connected to each other—and both are aware of what this connection entails—that doesn’t prevent strangers from spying on the privacy of your home because you’ve given them free access. It’s a novel that explores the dangers of hyperconnectivity and how vulnerable we can become as a result of new technologies.
Al principio me parecĂa una historia muy simpática, uno llega a encariñarse con los protagonistas de esta historia, ya que vemos las dos partes, la de tener un kentuki y la de ser un kentuki. Me encantĂł que no es tanto de relatos, sino que cada una de estas historias parecen ir conectándose a su manera. Vemos diferentes visiones de lo que pasa con los kentukis y sus amos en diversas partes del mundo. Incluso nos muestra cĂłmo se van afianzando los vĂnculos y otros que se terminan por discrepancias.
>At first, it struck me as a very charming story; you really grow fond of the characters, since we see both sides—what it’s like to own a Kentuki and what it’s like to be a Kentuki. I loved that it’s not so much a collection of short stories, but rather that each of these stories seems to connect in its own way. We see different perspectives on what happens with Kentukis and their owners in various parts of the world. It even shows us how some bonds grow stronger, while others end due to disagreements.
En las primeras páginas todo parece ir bien, una madre es un kentuki que vive con una joven en Alemania a la que empieza a querer como una hija. Un padre divorciado tiene un kentuki que lo ayuda en el cuidado de su hijo, y asĂ muchas otras historias. Incluso hay una muy interesante de un joven que empezĂł a hacer negocios comprando diferentes tarjetas para ser kentuki, recolectar informaciĂłn de dĂłnde viven y cĂłmo son sus amos para venderlos en Internet a usuarios que quieran vivir una vida en especĂfica, y en un momento termina descubriendo y ayudando a una niña que fue secuestrada.
>In the first few pages, everything seems to be going well: a mother is a “Kentuki” who lives with a young woman in Germany whom she begins to love like a daughter. A divorced father has a “Kentuki” who helps him care for his son, and there are many other stories like this. There’s even a very interesting one about a young man who started a business buying different “Kentuki” cards to gather information about where his “masters” live and what they’re like, so he could sell this information online to users who want to live a specific kind of life—and at one point, he ends up discovering and helping a girl who had been kidnapped.
Todos son relatos muy interesantes que nos lo presentan de forma intercalada, algunos se terminan apenas empiezan y otros duran varios capĂtulos hasta el final. En un momento estás leyendo sobre la vida en Alemania y al siguiente estás viendo al contrabandista, luego volviste al niño que tiene un kentuki para sentir que es libre de alguna manera, y despuĂ©s volviste a la trama de Alemania de nuevo. Es bastante ingenioso y sabe como mantenerte atrapada porque cuando más interesante se pone una trama, salta a la otra y uno se queda con las ganas de saber quĂ© paso en la anterior.
>They’re all very interesting stories that are interwoven throughout the book; some end as soon as they begin, while others span several chapters until the end. One moment you’re reading about life in Germany, and the next you’re following the smuggler; then you’re back with the boy who has a Kentucky to feel free in some way, and then you’re back to the German storyline again. It’s quite ingenious and knows how to keep you hooked because just when one plot gets really interesting, it jumps to another, leaving you eager to find out what happened in the previous one.
Por momentos, algunos relatos se vuelven perturbadores y adquieren tintes medios turbios. Lo que destacĂł es que ninguna de estas historias tuvo un final decente, todas terminaron de una manera que no vi venir, ni me lo esperaba la verdad. En ocasiones me dio mucha pena porque hasta lleguĂ© a considerar buena idea tener un kentukis jajaja, pero la verdad es que no lo recomiendo. Es cierto, es un peligro tener a un completo desconocido del que no sabes nada, ni de quĂ© parte del mundo viene y tiene libre acceso a tu vida por más que vos lo quieras controlar. Esa falsa ilusiĂłn de que el "amo" tiene el control es mentira, pero los Kentukis tampoco son libres en sĂ, tiene sus limitaciones motoras, necesitan cargarse y son frágiles, como cualquier aparato tecnolĂłgico.
>At times, some of the stories become unsettling and take on a somewhat murky tone. What stood out was that none of these stories had a decent ending; they all ended in a way I didn’t see coming—and honestly, I wasn’t expecting it either. Sometimes it made me really sad because I even went so far as to think it might be a good idea to have a “kentukis,” hahaha, but the truth is, I don’t recommend it. It’s true—it’s dangerous to have a complete stranger about whom you know nothing, not even where in the world they’re from, and who has free access to your life, no matter how much you try to control it. That false illusion that the “owner” is in control is a lie, but Kentukis aren’t truly free either; they have their own physical limitations, need to be charged, and are fragile, just like any other piece of technology.
Es un libro ideal para ver los peligros de las tecnologĂas, no del lado de demonizarlas, pero sĂ siendo consciente del peligro que pueden traer, sobre todo esas modas locas si no se las regulan bien. Al principio me extrañó porque creĂ que los que compraban el kentuki no tenĂan idea de que estos eran manejados por otros humanos que veĂan todo lo que hacĂan, pero no, ellos sĂ eran conscientes. Lo especificaba en el manual de instrucciones y aĂşn asĂ aceptaban prenderlos y establecer la conexiĂłn, incluso para ayudarlos en la crianza de los hijos, una locura.
>It’s an ideal book for understanding the dangers of technology—not to demonize it, but to be aware of the risks it can pose, especially those crazy trends if they aren’t properly regulated. At first, I was surprised because I thought the people buying the Kentuki had no idea that these devices were controlled by other humans who could see everything they did, but no—they were well aware of it. It was specified in the instruction manual, and yet they still agreed to turn them on and establish the connection—even to help them raise their children. It’s crazy.
Pero al ir leyendo terminĂ© generando empatĂa por alguna de estas personas y pensĂ© en que asĂ como hay gente mal intencionada, hay otras que son buenas y de verdad quieren ayudar, y establecer un vĂnculo real. Pero eso no deja de ser un poco perturbador la verdad, una cosa no quita la otra. Igual me pareciĂł un libro muy interesante y me encantĂł leerlo, es una muy buena historia y no es para nada predecible. Además es bastante atrapante, recomiendo un montĂłn su lectura si les llama la atenciĂłn.
>But as I kept reading, I ended up feeling empathy for some of these people, and I thought that just as there are people with bad intentions, there are others who are good and truly want to help and build a real connection. But that’s still a little unsettling, to be honest—one thing doesn’t cancel out the other. Still, I thought it was a very interesting book and I loved reading it—it’s a great story and not at all predictable. It’s also quite gripping; I highly recommend reading it if it piques your interest.
