ENGLISH VERSION. Time with oneself: the art of prioritizing ourselves while remaining human. Reading the post published by Dr. @emiliorios on @holos-lotus—part of his "Séptimo Día" (Seventh Day) column: https://ecency.com/@emiliorios/tiempo-contigo-mismo-es-un-tiempo-de-prevencion-reflexiones-sobre-como-amarnos-correctamente-esen—led me to reflect on the compelling truths presented there.
[Resource](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/mujer-rubia-chica-agradable-papel-3180164/) I have decided to focus my reflection on the following point raised in the work: "We are taught to meet social expectations in order to stay in everyone's good graces—expectations we sometimes do not wish to fulfill, yet do so in order to be acknowledged and accepted."
The first mistake many parents make lies in instilling in their children the idea that they must please everyone, making this a priority.
If we thoroughly analyze the stages of life, we realize that childhood and adolescence are the most vulnerable periods, as greater maturity and independence are already present by the time one reaches young adulthood.
[Resource](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/retrato-pensamiento-atenci%C3%B3n-chico-1976914/) During childhood, children strive to be recognized by those around them—one need only look at the lengths babies go to in order to attract attention, and how they resort to crying when they fail to do so. Throughout childhood, the need to please others and belong to the group remains a constant, underlying drive.
Parents and close family members often encourage in children a desire to please everyone, even if it means sacrificing their own interests.
Adolescence is a rather complex stage—for, as the name implies, it is a time of many lacks and growing pains. It is precisely when the urge to join in the excitement can become a dangerous trigger; in their eagerness to fit in with the group and gain recognition, adolescents may make mistakes with serious consequences.
[Resource](https://pixabay.com/es/photos/hombre-fumador-cigarrillo-fumar-8241299/) I remember that it was precisely during that phase of my life that I started smoking, acquiring a habit that kept me in its grip for thirty years; it all stemmed from a desire to fit in with the group and feel acknowledged.
I believe that parents and other family members should pay close attention to adolescents, yet do so from a distance and with great discretion, ensuring the young people do not feel hounded. Based on observed needs, guidance becomes necessary—though it should be offered without resorting to imposition.
Something very similar occurs in youth, albeit with a greater degree of maturity; however, external influences—particularly regarding trends and sometimes even aspirations—often play a significant role. Indeed, there are instances where individuals choose a career path not out of genuine calling, but simply to follow others.
As we have observed, there is a marked tendency to put our own needs and interests aside in order to focus on others. In my view, this pattern of behavior undermines our self-worth, as it stems from undervaluing ourselves.
It is good to care about others—above all, we must be deeply human—yet there are moments, and even entire periods, when we must "summon up our courage" (or "steel ourselves"), giving it our all; and we do so with satisfaction.
While concern for those around us should naturally be present, it must not come at the expense of our own well-being; we need to protect our own space to meet our needs and—why not?—to enjoy life as well.
