Spiritualising Psychological Problems

Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece on a topic I find interesting to write about, namely spiritualising mental health, because it seems that nowadays, suffering from anxiety, depression or any emotional problem is seen as synonymous with a lack of faith, not trusting God enough or being weak in spirit – and ultimately, this leaves us feeling confused and guilty.
And this is very common in cultures and families with deep-rooted religious traditions, where those suffering from an emotional problem are judged and made to feel as though their faith is failing – but no, that is not the case, because no one is immune to suffering from a mental health problem, whatever their religion or spiritual beliefs may be.
Because this is like trying to solve a chemical, neurobiological and emotional problem through fasting, prayer and meditation alone, amongst other things.
But we must understand that God also works through science and uses tools such as psychology and psychiatry to heal and help those suffering from mental health issues; it is not a lack of faith, but simply that we need to make space for what is causing us pain.
Seeking to spiritualise our pain by relying solely on our religion or spiritual practices is like numbing ourselves or escaping so as not to face reality.
Whilst it is true that when any believer crosses the threshold of pain with honest and compassionate professional support, they are not ceasing to believe but rather strengthening their faith in life, in God and in themselves.
And I have come to understand this from my own experience.

Whilst in therapy with my psychologist, I felt that I didn’t trust God enough
As I progressed through psychotherapy, my faith and beliefs came to the fore, and through questions and reflections, I realised that my spiritual and religious beliefs stemmed more from guilt and trauma than from genuine faith.
In my case, I went for anxiety issues and ended up tackling much deeper and more personal issues that, for fear of rejection, I didn’t want to talk about.
After this, I realised that some miracles happen in unexpected ways, whilst others are part of a process and depend on each person’s individual experience. Because just as I needed science to heal, I have also needed the spiritual dimension; and in my faith, both are tools that God created to help me.
Because true spirituality opens our minds to view life without judging it
Without exception, we all go through many dark nights, and acknowledging that we need help does not make us any less devout; rather, it reminds us that we are human. That is why we must not merely address what torments us through prayer alone, but also through action
Which is another way of looking at miracles
