Photo of My propiety Forgiveness is a choice, not an obligation Hello, friends of Holus Lotus. As usual, I’m sharing a reflective piece on forgiveness. Society generally puts pressure on us to forgive everything, as if it were the only requirement for healing, but the truth is that forgiveness is a personal choice and not a moral or spiritual obligation, as we have always been led to believe.

It’s strange, isn’t it? Yet it’s certainly true that people often view forgiveness as an obligation rather than a conscious choice, where each person decides based on their own conscience, rather than with the feeling that life will reward us for it.

One of the things that leads us to misinterpret what forgiveness means is precisely our conditioned beliefs, as many of us believe that true love forgives, forgets and even leads us to reconcile with those who have hurt us

And no, it won’t always be like that, because we must understand that pain is personal: what felt like a wound to you may have meant nothing to the other person, and that is a harsh reality. Because there are wounds that stem from a lack of empathy, respect and love, and they are not healed by the validation of others but by our own self-love.

Let’s stop romanticising forgiveness and realise that it isn’t the same for everyone and that it isn’t a prerequisite for our mental health.

Rather, true forgiveness is for ourselves when we stop expecting others to acknowledge and validate what was done to us.

My experience When I went to therapy a while ago for anxiety and low self-esteem stemming from my sexual orientation – an area where I’d been subjected to a great deal of abuse – this caused me a lot of resentment and frustration because I’d grown up believing everything I’d been told.

And whilst in therapy, as I recounted my story honestly, I gradually came to the conclusion that, for me, healing meant understanding that forgiveness has different meanings and forms for everyone, and that my beliefs about forgiveness were heavily influenced by religion and moral pressure, rather than by my own reality.

And from there I began a professional, honest and very humane journey of self-discovery, during which I came to realise that, for me, not everything can be forgiven, and that, too, is part of mental health – and that doesn’t make me a bad person, but rather someone who chooses to look after themselves and accept their own truth, because my peace of mind is more important than anyone else’s expectations.

And in my case, this helped me enormously to understand, accept and value myself.

Because a wound isn’t healed by forgiveness, but by distance and time, so that it doesn’t happen again.

Forgiving can be very liberating for many, whilst for others, not forgiving can be just as liberating – and that’s the difference: knowing our own story so we can heal it, and from there reaching an honest conclusion.

Thank you very much for reading
