I was out on a wander today because someone told me that an old hospital was being torn down near the beach, and I have no option but to presume that it is going to be yet another massive build for tourism that is completely unnecessary. But while I was there I encountered a piece of land that has been cleared for quite some time and there was some reasonably good street art there.
Nothing special, but not bad. Some of it was great and I would like to see more of it. The rest was crap as is expected but one of the things I really enjoyed about all of this was that the stuff that was sprayed was all on a spot of land that was not yet developed. They weren't really ruining anyone's private property.
While I love street art, I hate vandalism. I would call the police on someone that was painting something amazing if it was unauthorized and on a piece of land that someone else had painted a certain way. I think some of this stems from my childhood where my grandfather had a circular driveway and the local teenage punks kept doing spinouts in his driveway and would tear up the grass and the stones of the driveway constantly until eventually my grandpa just took the circular driveway out.
I like art, I like creativity, but I hate vandals.
These pieces I found today aren't necessarily all that amazing, but they are spray and they are original and I really appreciate that. Street art done with brushes kind of pisses me off because well, it isn't really street art now is it?
most of the other things in the alleyway of sorts was borderline trash but still pretty decent. It is tough to make me enjoy a tag of someone's name. I prefer the things where it is a picture of something, anything! Provided it is original and artistic. A repetitive spelling of your name is cool, but no matter how much talent it took to make it happen, I will never appreciate someone that made up their own font to simply spell their name.
This is why I didn't really zoom in on any of these other ones.
This last one might seem basic, but I kind of appreciated it the most. you can see the mold on the bottom there as this area has long since been forgotten by the people that have buildings here. On the other side of that wall is an Air Force base and you better believe that nobody fucks with that.
The other side though, I believe it is considered fair game to everyone including the taggers. I like it, but again, I would film anyone and help the police tag anyone down if they were defacing someone's personal property.
It's a tricky game street-art is. I like it but I always feel as though maybe I shouldn't because they likely do not have permission to do what they are doing. I believe that in Danang that there is a certain code among these people and this is why they aren't being routinely rounded up and put in jail.
This stuff that I took photos of is part of a much larger collection of pieces that extends almost all the way from Danang to Hoi An among all of the abandoned construction projects that likely shouldn't have been started in the first place.
If you want to have your own run at seeing this and many more things, just head south from the "end of tourism" in Danang and continue south. It's not hidden. It's quite visible.
