The Catinual Committing Of Crimes

----------

Last night's kill count was four. The night before two. Each morning when I wake up, I steel myself as I open my bedroom door.

For I know the scene of carnage that usually awaits me.

Now, living in the wilderness means there are more than a few critters about, and I do have my mouse trap trap line that I tend to, but here lately it's like there has been a spike in critter manifestation or something, because holy rodents are they plentiful this year.

And the Void, the Angel of Death that is known as Jojo to our family, she is doing her part to reduce the population of small animals.

Last night, as I was lounging in bed reading the fourth Dungeon Crawler Carl book, I found my eyes doing that dance they do before one conks out for the duration. I put down my book and had just settled into my pillow when the screams of rodent death filled my ears.

Jojo had brought a mouse in my room and was doing her best Orca plays with seal dinner impression UNDER MY BED.

Now, I usually shut my door at night as I wish to block out the sounds of Nature being metal during my restorative repose time, but the hubs had left the door open when he came in.

He jumped up and removed the KIA rodent from the premises.

This morning, when I opened the door, there was a bat and a vole lining my hallway, along with assorted organs. I have to hand it to Jojo though, she is very clinical in her liver and kidney removal. I mean, it's kinda sweet in a way that she leaves them for me, but I am just not going to eat them.

At least the critters were dead. The other day she brought in two live mice within fifteen minutes of each other, and I have to admit it's a bit unsettling when she lets the go so she can watch them from a high perch. It's like a raptor watching a Jurassic Park tourist. The poor little mouse ran over by the big artillery shell we have sitting in our living room and just stared at my hubs and Jojo, almost like assuming a pose of fate defying obstinance.

Yep, I removed that brave little fella's corpse later too.

Nothing beats the dead bird in my bed though. Honestly, I am finding it all a bit fatiguing because it makes so much cleaning for me. The amount of disinfecting and laundry I am doing because of Operation Slaughtermouse is quite something. And furthermore, no one wants dead things left in their beds, or their shoes, or anywhere really. If they do, the therapist in me is curious about that internal motivation and would love to discuss it, for all it has done to me is make me weary and slightly paranoid.

But, so is life. And on the plus side, maybe this new little heathen won't be so prone to leaving her kills in the house! We took in a new cat recently and she had one single baby, whom we affectionately have named Marshmallow Petals. Petals is a love and we are busy socializing her. She really adores the hubs! I just hope she is all about leaving her kills outside, away from me.
