Sunrise

Friday morning I woke at 4AM and laid in bed making the list for the day. I finally got up at 4:30AM and got my post written. Then I got the dehydrator unloaded. The first tray where the mandolin messed up had been too thick and hadn’t finished drying.

But I got nearly a pint of celery and a half pint of Walla onions. Then I got a load in the dishwasher and sat down for 10 minutes. Then I got up and got ready to go outside and was just starting to put the soup in freezer boxes when my #2 intern arrived at 8AM. So I put it back in the fridge to do later.

We went up and got the truck and loaded it up. It still had hay in it so the first thing was to back it into the Small garden and unload the 4 bales of hay. Then I backed it around to the section of fence my son had cleaned out on the middle pasture.

We got the wire off the broken gate post and then neatly wound up each strand. The broken posts went into the back of the truck. Then I pulled down to the section in the front pasture and we got that walked and fixed. There were 2 more broken posts.

In the driving back and forth, I couldn’t miss the new grass and the heavy truck sunk into the soft loam. So when we went up to unload the truck we grabbed the tamper.

Back at the house my #2 intern tamped the edges of the rut and smoothed it out as best she could. We couldn’t rake it even because of the new grass.

The front edges of the woodsheds had gotten quite weedy and the alcove had nearly a foot of leaves drifted down one side. I was tired of looking at the mess so my #2 intern and I got it all cleaned up.

It had started to get hot and humid again, so we got cleaned up and went inside. When I went to get a shower to cool down, she put the tomato soup in the freezer containers and got them in the freezer. Then she washed up the onion screens and trays and the parsley sheets for the dehydrator and got them put away to dry. She had just reached the point of putting them away when I realized one dehydrator was still running. So I got it unloaded and she washed up that tray.

By then it was time for her to go and I went in to sit down for a while before my #3 helper arrived at 12:30PM.

Our project for the afternoon was to harvest the kohlrabi and get it in the freezer. Some of them had gotten quite large.

So she got them peeled and sliced while I got the Squeezo ready to put away.

All the pieces need to be wiped with oil before being stored.

I’d gotten the blanching water heating and set up the cold bath for after. While we waited for the water to heat, she took all the squash from Thursday to the Survival center and ran some errands.

We got the kohlrabi finished and she took it to the freezer. We still had the best part of an hour left so we worked on another house plant.

When she left I watched a movie and then got my post written for Saturday. I got the house opened up as it’s to drop into the upper 50’s during the night.

Saturday I’m hoping to weed the Big garden in the early morning while it is cool. It hasn’t been done in a while and isn’t bad but, why wait til it is?
