So it's been winter and I haven't really seen anything worth taking a picture of out in my garden. If you don't believe me, just look at the last couple posts and you will see that things were not looking really perky or green. Except the weeds. But here is an idea for indoor fun and nutrition.
I heard that lentils can sprout and you can use them like bean sprouts for your salads or whatever, and they're probably very healthy. So let's give it a try!
No need for prep or washing anything. I just took a bag of lentils and opened them.
I have a knock-off Tupperware which is used to put away whole pizzas if you have leftovers.

Then I put a layer of them covering the entire bottom. I used filtered tap water and I just let them grow.
2 days into this project.
It did not seem like anything was happening the second day when I went to look. But just like the first day in, those little sprouts were not easy to see.
I thought they would all sprout at one time, but I guess it is a bit like popcorn, some pop earlier than others.
It is also important to change the water every day, which is kind of difficult. Especially if you have little plants that fall over if sloshed around a lot.
I wet a piece of cloth and put it in the Tupper and drape it over the edge and let it drip into the sink. It works like a siphon. Then I just get more water from the tap filter and put another quarter inch deep bath to replace yesterday's water.
When they start to get leaves that are opening up, then they begin to have more of a spinach taste to them. But they're very delicious and they can pick them and put them in salad and add something really special to it.
I may take a few of these and plant them to see how they do, besides, I have never seen a lentil plant.
The sun came out today and the temperature went to near 70 degrees. I cannot wait to get back at it on the terrace. I would do updates, but the photos make one think that the plants are dying rather than coming back from winter.
