Working on Past Compositions
While reviewing some past compositions, I came across Boarding Pass, a piece dedicated to Maestro Emmanuel Araque. I set out to finish it once and for all (though that's a big lie, since a piece of music is never truly finished, only paused).
I wrote this composition a few months ago. Back then, I only had the cornet melody and hadn't written the accompaniment. I planned to do it at the time and never did, so I just published the melody by itself here on Hive with nothing else.
So, after two somewhat intense days of work, I can finally share it with the accompaniment.
Pushing My Limits
It's the first time I've written for percussion, and it was a real headache since I had to write notations for 3 to 4 voices per bar. The amount of patience you need is incredible because, aside from how detail-oriented I am, the big problem with this piece is that it doesn't have a strictly defined musical style. In other words, it's a fusion of several styles (Hip-Hop, Samba, Jazz, Rumba Flamenca, Salsa...). I had to sit down and imagine how I wanted the drums to sound, and once I had it in my mind, I had to translate those thoughts into musical notation—without a doubt, a real challenge for me.
Drums are truly a difficult instrument to write for; my utmost respect goes to those percussionists who can sight-read those scores.
It was far from easy to write the accompaniment for this piece. I enjoyed it a lot, but I also had to push myself enormously to make sure what I was writing made sense and didn't cause any cacophony—trial and error, trial and error, until I finally hit upon the result I had more or less imagined.
Although, as I told you, a piece is never finished, I think it's important to showcase the versions. This would be version NÂş2 of Boarding Pass; maybe in a few years, I'll make versions 3, 4, 5... and so on to infinity.
