Bee Cheng Hiang Pandan Gula Melaka mooncake

Today, I revisited the Food Place food court, located at Pavilion Mall. The food court is located beside the Oriental Kopi Restaurant. It is time to try another stall food.

This time, I ordered a Pandan Gula Melaka mooncake from the Bee Cheng Hiang stall, which costs RM56.00 per piece.

Pandan Gula Melaka Mooncake is where traditional Chinese pastry meets Malaysian dessert flavours. Beneath its beautifully embossed, golden-brown baked skin lies a striking combination of fragrant pandan and rich gula Melaka. The pandan contributes a fresh, aromatic sweetness, while the palm sugar brings a deeper caramel-like richness. Together, the two create a flavour that feels instantly familiar to the Malaysian palate, reminiscent of classic pandan-and-gula-Melaka kuih, yet presented in the elegant form of a mooncake.

What I particularly like about this mooncake is the contrast in both colour and flavour when it is cut open. The green pandan filling stands against the darker gula Melaka centre, making the cross-section almost as interesting as the taste itself. It is a good example of how the humble mooncake has evolved beyond traditional fillings, incorporating distinctly local flavours while retaining its Chinese festive identity.
