Today, I revisited the Food Place food court, located at Pavilion Mall. The food court is located beside the Oriental Kopi Restaurant. It is time to try food from another stall.

This time, I ordered a Sizzling Chicken Yee Mee from Mr Peppery Rice stall, which costs RM11.00 per plate.

This dish is a comforting Chinese-style hotplate noodle meal that combines springy Yee Mee, tender braised chicken, Shiitake, cabbage and a rich dark gravy.

Served on a sizzling hotplate, the dish arrives with the noodles soaking up the savoury sauce while the heat continues to keep everything warm. The chicken pieces appear braised until tender, while the Shiitake add an earthy, savoury depth to the gravy. Lightly cooked cabbage provides a fresher and softer contrast to the rich noodles and sauce.

The Yee Mee itself is particularly distinctive. Unlike ordinary fresh noodles, Yi Mein/Yee Mee is a Cantonese egg noodle that is traditionally fried and dried before being cooked again, giving it its characteristic chewy, slightly springy texture and its ability to absorb flavourful gravy.

Yee Mee, also known as Yi Mein or E-Fu noodles, has deep roots in Cantonese cuisine. It is traditionally associated with celebrations and is often called a longevity noodle, as long, unbroken noodles symbolise a long life. Because of this symbolism, Yi Mein is commonly served at Chinese birthday celebrations, weddings, Lunar New Year gatherings and banquet meals.

There are several stories surrounding its origin, with one traditional account associating the noodle with Yi Bingshou, a Qing-era official, whose surname is said to have contributed to the name "Yi Mein." Over time, the noodle became a familiar feature of Cantonese banquet cuisine and developed into many variations, including versions served with seafood, chicken, vegetables and mushrooms.

The Sizzling Chicken Yee Mee is essentially a modern food-court interpretation of a traditional Cantonese noodle style: rich dark gravy, tender chicken and mushrooms paired with Yee Mee's distinctive chewy texture. The sizzling presentation adds an extra layer of theatre, making it feel more substantial and comforting than a regular bowl of noodles.
