Desahogo por dolor ajeno/Venting other people's pain.

Hola, amigos que me leen en Hive. ¡Hoy he sentido dolor ajeno!

Hello, friends who read me on Hive. Today I felt someone else's pain!

It's truly complex to make decisions that go beyond professional expectations, especially when they stem from the pursuit of economic improvements that should come with them. What we call professional interests, professional motivation, and a professional life project has been left behind in the dreams of many professionals living in Cuba. It's truly a shroud that is slowly enveloping almost all Cubans.

As a child, I always dreamed of being a good professional; like one of those admired by everyone in my community. My interests were varied, which was natural at that age: I wanted to be a doctor, a nurse, a teacher, a police officer, an architect, or something similar. My motivation was to choose a career that would allow me to study at a university and make a living from it; in part, I achieved that. Today I am a university professor! With all the merits I've earned and satisfied with my professional achievements. But, to what end? What do we do with so many titles?

Today in Cuba, a dynamic is unfolding between the non-state and state sectors that presents us with great confusion. The former benefits from new economic actors that result in greater financial income, attractive to many, while the latter deteriorates to its extreme, creating a great contradiction between the proper functioning of many health, education, and other institutions (also called state-funded entities) necessary for social welfare. This has resulted in migration from one sector to another, with little more than the question: how much will I earn?

The reality we are living in doesn't distinguish between people's academic levels; today, survival is the only way, breathing is a struggle, and this has led us to subordinate our professional interests to the economic needs of our families. We have to eat, clothe ourselves, and, if possible, live like human beings. The times have come when many people have decided to put their university degrees away in a drawer and tell themselves: Someday we will be strong again.

Origin of the matter.

Even though this is part of the This is the reality for Cubans, and in some way, it affects us all. This catharsis arose in my work context when a professional with a high academic standing in the university setting requested to resign from her position to take a job as a shop assistant, a position that doesn't require an academic degree, but where she will earn a salary three times that of a university professor. It's contradictory!

Like this case, there are thousands. We are at a point where professors and doctors risk losing their professions. I assure you that on several occasions, decisions like this have been just noises in my head, vague ideas that come and go, keeping me up at night, but they haven't gone beyond that; I think perhaps it's because I haven't faced a truly decisive situation.

My personal opinion, as affected by All of this

It's truly sad to see how the scales of social justice are tipping, and with them, years of study and sacrifice—sacrifices that no one can take away, since the knowledge gained will always be well used, regardless of the social context in which we find ourselves. But what about the relevance of our training and our professional interests?

Faced with all this uncertainty, other questions arise: What will be the professional life plans of the thousands of university students who enter our classrooms this September? How do we give meaning to the training of professionals who will work in the health and education sectors when the salary they will receive upon graduation is not enough to cover their expenses for the first 10 days of the month?

It's truly worrying! I believe that problems like this become social risks and are passed back on by society. In some way, they escalate into more complex situations. I understand that solutions to scenarios like these don't appear in hours or days, but I have faith that they will be resolved promptly.

I believe in the reunion of those who, under pressure, have abandoned what they love to do. Today, this is one of my main wishes. To you who are reading this, thank you for being here and allowing me this outlet. A big hug! I promise to stick around for a while, and I hope it will be a long one. Talk to you soon!
