Hello, friends of the HivePets community! How have you been? Losing a pet is a very difficult time for animal lovers; by nature, they don’t live as long as humans, so it’s always a risk we take. On that note, I think what’s important is to love them deeply from the moment they come into our lives, take care of them, and make them happy until their very last day.

I’m not here to talk about loss—on the contrary, I’d rather share some joy and good news with you. I’m back to give you an update on the little ones at home. I have three “dog kids”—I call them that because they’re so dear to me and, after all, members of my family. They’re two little girls and a 7-year-old boy.

We used to have two little dogs at home, Happy and Haruk; they grew up like siblings. A while back, I wrote about them here. Haruk was 10 years old; he crossed the rainbow bridge 7 months ago. He’s no longer with us physically, and his absence has been deeply felt by all of us—it’s been the greatest loss of the year. Happy became very sad, having lost his companion, his brother, his whole world—they were inseparable.

Little by little, we got through those sad days. Happy had recovered somewhat, but he was still a little down, so we decided to look for a puppy to keep him company—and also to take our minds off things a bit. After all, even though the pain we’ve experienced and the memories won’t fade, taking care of a little one would be good for all of us.

The search took several days, among trusted friends and colleagues at the university where we work, since I wasn’t looking for a “brand-name” or “state-of-the-art” puppy, ha ha ha. We weren’t just looking for a puppy to give love to and to fill a little bit of the void in our lives and Happy’s. I had already forgotten the responsibility that comes with having a puppy just a few months old at home.

Of the two, the bigger one is named Mina—she’s a black Tibetan Spaniel—and the tiniest one is named Sophy, an apple-headed Chihuahua. Both are 5 months old, born just a few days apart. They play together almost all day, and since they’re different sizes, we’re constantly watching over them at home to make sure the bigger one doesn’t accidentally hurt the little one. Together with their older brother, they’re the joy of our home!

How did these little ones end up at our house?

The first to arrive was Mina, the older one—jet-black, beautiful and pure as the night, full of love for everyone. When Happy saw her, all he did was sniff her and follow her everywhere, all the time. I was always very careful because he’s a bit jealous and might have hurt her without meaning to.

Two days later, Sophy arrived. She was only 32 days old and could fit in my hand. Her mother no longer had any milk, and her original owners asked me to take her in because she was already feeding herself. I’ll admit, I was a little nervous. Although she was smaller, she was always the most well-behaved—she ate very well, finished all her chick food, and was very consistent with her sleep schedule. A truly well-behaved little girl.

Mina, on the other hand, was much more innocent; she struggled to eat, waiting for her sister to finish before she would eat herself. She was a little more complicated—she looked older but was more fragile. Happy wouldn’t face her directly; he wouldn’t get too close, just watched her from a distance. I think her color startled him—maybe it reminded him of his brother Haruk, who had the same colors.

About Raising Them

It’s been a challenge for me to have these two little dogs since they were puppies; it’s a joy to watch them grow, but it really takes a lot of effort and is a tremendous responsibility. No amount of care for them has been enough, and I’m not just talking about basic attention.

The puppies live inside the apartment, which is spacious and big enough for the three of us—the whole place is theirs. They both sleep in my room; they have their own little bed, although they spend quite a bit of time in mine. To ensure their well-being, we take every possible precaution, such as regular visits to the vet, deworming, and vaccinations to prevent diseases—all of which are essential at this stage of their growth.

A healthy and varied diet is essential. As far as possible, dog food for small breeds is hard to find in Cuba, but we prepare homemade meals following our veterinarian’s recommendations. I had forgotten that they needed to be fed several times a day to prevent dehydration, since they were so tiny. Thank God, everything has gone very well!

The Relationships Among the Three

Things were a little rough at first with her older brother—it was all new to him—but it was just a matter of time. Little by little, Sophy started to gain his trust; every time she bowed to him, she’d sneak in a little lick, and that helped build their bond. The little one has her own tricks and ways of winning everyone over.

For Mina, things were a little more complicated. If you look at the photos, you’ll see that Happy and she are the same breed, but there’s nothing that time can’t reverse or transform. As she grew up and played with her sister, she gradually got closer to him and drew him in more and more. The first time I saw the three of them playing together, it made me so happy!

Today, they’re three very close-knit and happy puppies; they eat together and even share their food, passing it from bowl to bowl, ha ha ha. I just let them do their thing—the important thing is that they eat and finish everything.

I’ll admit that at first I had some fears—about raising Sophy and Mina, and about how to help the little ones fit in and be accepted by Happy, after what happened with Haruk and seeing how sensitive he was toward everyone. But we went ahead with the decision; they’ve brought so much happiness into our lives, they fit in easily, and today they’re part of our family.

I’m happy for the opportunity their previous owners gave us—to have them and watch them grow—and for the opportunity we all gave them here at home when we welcomed them. We’re continuing on this journey; the girls are still little, and new things come up every day. The three of them together fill us with so much love. They’ll always be well looked after and cared for.

A big hug! I promise to share some stories and updates about raising them. See you soon!
