Viaje, bienvenida, reinicio, partida, emigración y reencuentro.

>Journey, welcome, fresh start, departure, emigration, and reunion. These are some of the ideas that come to mind when I look at the image for this week’s [Contest: Observe, Think, Write](https://peakd.com/hive-192096/@lanzjoseg/concurso-observa-piensa-escribe-04ae24ec14116). >

>Hello, friends of the Top Familia community (@TopFiveFamily). We Cubans live with a longing for that definitive journey that will take us to a different life—where the wind blowing in through the window ruffles our hair and lifts from our shoulders the burden we carry as if it were something we were born with. A yearning for that great journey, one that will reset us so we can start a new life from scratch.

>And it’s not that we love our homeland any less; on the contrary, we love it too much. A true Cuban always returns to their hometown, whether it’s a rural, countryside area—poor and underprivileged—or, conversely, an urban area where luxury reigns. The times and circumstances mean that departures are becoming more frequent, as are emigration and reunions.

>I see the sign that reads WELCOME TO UPATA, and my mind turns to the thousands of Cubans who have reached their final destination—those who have given their lives along the way; the young man who set out in search of adventure, to explore new lands; the father, mother, brother, or son who left his family behind to secure a better livelihood; the pregnant woman who left with the hope that her child would be born in a foreign land; and the grandparents who decided to spend their final days with a little more comfort and peace of mind.

>Truly, it is a challenge that not all of us choose to take on, and often it is because we have no alternatives, to protect the safety of others who are more vulnerable, due to personal inclinations, fear of change, or insecurities; there are also the stories of the families of those who never reached their destination. Emigrating requires courage; it can be a challenge for many.

>The image also evokes a sense of reunions for me; it gives me the feeling of someone who misses that huge sign on the avenue that says: Welcome home. From my own family experience, coming home is always a joy and brings that warmth in your chest that you can only control when you see the people you miss the most.

>Thanks to @lanzjoseg and the contributors for organizing this contest, for letting me think a little beyond my limits, and for giving me the chance to share a little bit of our daily life here.

>To you, my reader, thank you for being here and for letting me write. A big hug! I promise to stick around for a while, and I hope it’ll be for a long time. See you soon!
