English Version
Life for us Cubans has become more complicated every day, but if there’s one thing we know how to do, it’s find alternatives and reinvent ourselves.
During the day, when I’m at the hospital, I can still get online, so I take advantage of it to post on Hive, reply to messages, and talk to friends and family. But as soon as I get home... everything disappears. I have no signal, sometimes not even enough to make a simple phone call.
At first, it drove me crazy. I had things to do, posts I wanted to publish, and people I wanted to talk to, but I would end up staring at my phone, waiting for a little bar of signal to magically appear.
So I decided to change my strategy and create my own little afternoon routine without Internet.
Now, when I get home, I buy something tasty to snack on, turn on my laptop, and put on a series or movie. And, of course, I make my afternoon coffee.
Many times, I end up chatting with my mom, and honestly, those conversations have become one of my favorite parts of the day. We talk about anything and everything, laugh, share what happened during the day, and simply spend some time together.
I’m not going to pretend I enjoy being disconnected, because I don’t. I miss being able to message my friends whenever I want, post on Hive without worrying about the connection, or simply have Internet available when I need it.
But somehow, in the middle of all this, I’ve learned to enjoy these simple afternoons a little more.
A snack, a movie, a cup of coffee, and a good conversation.
And so, between blackouts, poor signal, and a lot of imagination, we keep finding ways to enjoy ourselves. Because if there’s one thing Cubans have, it’s the creativity to keep going even when it seems like there are no options left.
